Lake George Winery Shiraz 2009. Since I'm in sunny Queanbeyan I thought I should give a local drop a crack. The guy at Canberra Cellars recommended this for me, and it's like drinking liquid velvet. Brilliant drink.

Just finished most of a bottle of Partisan Grenache.

Oh my...

Have a case of Partisan 'Dam Keeper' Pinot Noir on order. Looking forward to it!

SGL, that Lake George is brilliant, and 2009 was the vintage to end all vintages down here...The Reserve, while pricey (and I think as yet unreleased in the 09), is mind blowing.

I'm on a 2010 Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles...one of my favourites, from a great year, what else could a man ask for?

Yeah that was what they guy at Canberra Cellars in Braddon was saying. Steered me away from 2010 saying it was a wet + cold vintage.

I have got a Nick O'Leary Shiraz for tonight that I picked up from Jim Murphys.

Can someone recommend a decent mid-range shiraz for a plebian who has barely tasted a wine in his life?

2010 was ok, cold and wet but manageable. 2011 was a disaster.

Nick is my favourite man in Canberra. He's just got a touch for wine. In 2011 when even Clonakilla were considering not releasing wines, he released his first ever Reserve label. His 2009 shiraz drinks better than anything in the region, except Tims $100 stuff....his 2010 is comfortably the best straight shiraz from that vintage in the region IMO, as Tim didn't do a syrah. His 2012 riesling, I tried blind at a riesling day...swore it was from Alsace.

Shingleback Haycutters Shiraz
Grant Burge Miamba Shiraz
Fox Gordon Eight Uncles Shiraz
St Hallett Faith Shiraz
St Hallett Western Front Shiraz
Teusner The Riebke Shiraz
Tyrrells Brokenback Shiraz
Tar & Roses Shiraz
Ad Hoc Middle of Everywhere Shiraz
Mt Langi Billi Billi Shiraz

I could go on if you like

I would say, no matter what anyone says, steer clear of Taylors and Pepperjack. They get recommended all the time and, personally, I think they're just awful

Hmmm, well this is a 2011 Nick O'Leary Shiraz. The nose isn't very prominent, and it is a bit flat middle palate, but it finishes well and has some plesant edges. Would love to try a wine from 2009 by this guy.

I expect to ask you guys quite a few of those "recommend an intro-level ___ wine" questions in the next couple weeks  I am being told I should develop a basic understanding of wine both by work and by a particular ladyfriend.

Nick's 2011 is bloody good given the vintage....it needs to open up a bit, when it does the fruit comes out a lot more. He always extracts a lot of pepper from his fruit, which I love...

Jim Barry "Three Little Pigs" Cabernet Shiraz Malbec. A bunch of gold medal stickers on this, and deservedly so. Drinks wonderfully, heaps of flavour, great structure, a truely wonderful table red.

For mass produced which you will find in any bottle shop, give the Yalumba Y Series Shiraz a crack. The Yalumba guys always do a solid wine at that price point.

Gave this a crack tonight, thought it was delicious and very good as a steady drink while I cooked and ate with a few friends. Drank a whole bottle to myself which was possibly ill-advised given my lack of experience with wines.

Tomorrow night Chardonnay is on the cards. Have been told to try Wolf Blass Eaglehawk as a solid entry-level bottle for wine newbs but if any of you guys have a great boutique bottle to recommend by all means let me know.

Evans and Tate Metricup Road Chardonnay is a good drop. WA based. Not a good as the Sauv Blanc, in my mind, but then I prefer SB's.

If you want another good Shiraz, give the Brand's Laira Stentifords a crack. Bit pricey, but worth it.

Does um no mean that Wolf Blass Eaglehawk is shite? I hear it is popular but if it's shit might give it a miss.

Cheers for the suggestions though will pick one or two up to share around.
