Arpatin Barolo....$38 Barolo, not sure what to expect. Pours like a proper nebbiolo anyway, slightly funky looking

Independent bottlo around the corner from me in Penshurst. Hiding on the bottom shelf of their red wine section. 2006, so I have a feeling it might have been there for a while.

God this is a good wine. You could put a few more years on it if you wanted to, but it is drinking perfect now. Regret not buying more when I had the chance. Thick dark fruit flavours, bold tannins, and a long finish. Real cracker of a vintage.

Honestly? Never been that impressed by the Grey Label wines...the 2008 is a good one, but I still feel like there is much better value in that price range. The 2009 was just awful, and even the '10 didn't hit high notes with me.

Anyway, tonight is a 2011 Mt Majura TSG. Tempranillo, Shiraz, Graciano. Savoury, bright, and delicious. Great warmer weather red

I never used to like pinot, but I find I'm slowly moving away from really big reds as I get older. I started out loving Barossa shiraz, big and heavy...I still do, of course, but I find as I get older and drink more wines I much prefer cooler climate wines with a bit more elegance. I find them more interesting, I guess. My favourite shiraz these days is Canberra or some of the Victorian stuff out of the Pyrenees or Grampians, for example.

Essenze Pinot Noir is really good (Marlborough). Last Horizon is superb, IMO. Tasmanian with a really elegant colour and taste. I've had it at room temp and chilled, and think both are really great ways to have it (even though some people think chilled red is strange).

Petaluma White Label Cab Sauv. The new name for Bridgewater Mill, and now a straight Cabernet instead of a blend. Very excentuated Coonawarra notes of mint + treacle, but still a good drink. An autumn red.

Had a bottle of 2006 The McRae Wood Shiraz (Claire Valley) on the weekend. Outstanding, I was actually a tad upset when the last drop disappeared. Absolutely loved it, a real pleasure to drink.

The thing I love about wine ATM is old rules are slowly vanishing. You dink it how you like it. IMO that's what wine is all about.
