Depends on its age. If its a young red, I pop it in the morning and leave it all day. If its old but screwcap, usually for two or three hours. If its cork, and quite old, I only decant for about half an hour to let the sediment settle. SGL / Baz?

Also, your wife a Cellarmasters member eh? ;-)

I'm guessing so.I usually prefer to attend a decent bottleshop and spend 30min-1hr picking the wine. I take it my expectations are spot on?

Have you used one of the aerators, if so thoughts re time/if it quickens the process ?

I have 3, in order of preference

I was sceptical at first, however we (me & a mate) aerated 90% of a bottle through the aerator into the decanter, we then poured the remainder (straight from bottle un-aerated) into 2 glasses. We waited 30 min then blindfolded ourselves & our wives poured 2 glasses of the aerated wine into 2 glasses. Definitely a difference.

Vinturi is awesome and does make a difference

Personally I never decant for more than about 2-3 hours, except in very rare cases

I have used an aerator. I don't mind them, but prefer the aesthetic of decanting and the effect it gives.

Baz, the Wine Educator at McWilliam's said to decant young stuff for up to 8 hours, even more. I've just followed his advice, and it seems to be good so far. Do you know the difference 2-3 is to 8 or 9?

Also, Gomersal Mataro, 2009. Really enjoying it. Quite different taste, you can tell its been sitting in oak for 30 months and its got some great berry flavours (which ones, I'm not sure  ).

Well I generally run young wine through an aerator into the decanter, so that takes the time down. But I also enjoy wine younger, on the whole. So it's a personal thing. Plus I find I'm very sensitive to oxidized flavours, which can start to develop surprisingly quickly in some wines even if they are top quality.

Also, unless I have company, or am drinking prior to going out for a bit of a bender, I generally keep a glass or two for the next night.

Fair enough - that all makes sense :)

2010 Rolling Shiraz. Picked up 6 of these and 6 Cab Merlot a couple of years ago. IIRC they were 6 for $79 and came with a free magnum for every 6.

Good deal. Good wine. Probably drinking perfectly now I would say, quite intense fruit, medium body, good soft tannin, lots of cinnamon.

Dan's are selling PJ Shiraz for $17. If I were Treasury, I'd be pissed the largest Shiraz and red on the market was discounted by nearly $13.

I wouldn't. Pepperjack isn't worth 17, let alone the $25+ people ask for it. Metala is 2 for 25, better wine and a better deal
