What was waiting for me when I returned from a week in the New England:

Shame about the red being a Merlot though...

Laudum "Barrica Especial" 2009 Alicante (Monestrall). Picked this up in Mascot today. Wow, just wow. I think I have a new favourite international red in front of Cotes du Rhone. This is an excellent Mouvedre, and for only about $20.

We could have a thread for the truly-awful-to-be-avoided wines.

I seem to come across them often enough.

Not entirely true. Some good juice exists sub $15 - you just need to look harder for it given there is so much more.

Yeah, you're right. You do have to look carefully for it though.

I think sometimes Twizzle is a bit of a wine snob when it comes to pricing. Unlike many other consumer products, you don't always get what you pay for in wine.

BWS recently had Jacobs Creek Reserve Cab Sav and Shiraz at 2 for $20

De Bortoli make an effort to release reasonable wine. The Deen range in particular is great value and you can find the Durif, Petite Verdot and Cab Sav for $12-$15 . Sometimes less than that on special.

Keep you eye out and there are usually bargains around.

What made me post was an awful Cab Merlot from Mudgee. Got it on special. Not a fan of Mudgee wines anyway but this only cemented my opinion.

If you go cheap at least target a region. Coonwarra Cab Sav for example.

True. Pricing is very misleading. Still, that's the fun of wine - working it out by trial and error. It is always an interesting experience!

The problem wasn't Mudgee, it was Cab Merlot from a cool climate. Drink a good pinot or shiraz from Mudgee with a decent winemaker and it will be a far different experience.

The Angoves is quite good, actually. We tasted it the other day. Good value for money.

Need to try that GSM.
