Don't knock the cono sur. Stuff does well for the money.

Will depend on individual stores range, but Ata Rangi, Felton Road, one of the Ten Minutes by Tractor single vineyard pilots, Paringa Estate...

key to surviving goon of fortune whilst still being able to stand up is ensuring you survey the landscape around the hills hoist, as well as the foundations of the rotating clothesline itself - does it wobble?

if there is a slight slope to the land, ensure you are not standing at the lowest point, or most spins will land closest to you.. including many double ups..

Bought a pair of wines while I was on tour in Broke Fordwich.

Grabbed a Mt. Broke Skinny Dipping, which is a slightly sweeter semillon. I resisted the urge to get their Sticky Fingers, which was just a pure dessert wine.

Also got an Ascella Organic Pure Red - mix of three different grapes that goes down alright.

Just realized there's a vineyard near here, and I'm now curious as to what they'd grow in such a cold climate. Pinot noir?

Just realized there's a vineyard near here, and I'm now curious as to what they'd grow in such a cold climate. Pinot noir?

Is that the one just outside Armidale? I think their main grape is Merlot, but I could be wrong.

New Penfolds...well what we tried anyway.

2012 Bin 28-Average, no tannin and surprisingly flat
2012 Bin 8-Finally a good Bin 8 that genuinely tastes like a "baby 389". Great fruit, good structure.
2012 Bin 150-Ridiculously good. Rich, velvety, complex wine, tonnes of fruit, excellent oak, tannin, other good stuff like marzipan and graphite to give it interest.
2012 Bin 389-Very good. Well made, good structure and balance. High acid though, needs time
2012 Bin 407-Rubbish. Genuinely poor wine, which is a surprise. High acid, flat fruit, no balance at all.
2012 RWT-Absolute monster. Layers and layers of flavour, fruit and herbs and tobacco and chocolate and pepper and on and on, massive texture, surprisingly soft tannins for the age although very noticeable.

Personally the Bin 150 was the pick. The RWT was the best wine, but for less than half the price the 150 stood up to it amazingly well.

Yeh have been to the mt broke winery...way out the back of the hunter. Not a big fan of whites but didn't mind what they had. The sticky ringers was awesome

Picked up a $7 rioja called Campo Viejo at Costco the other day, because why not?

Anyway it's pretty bloody good for that money, decent body, quality fruit, touch of oak. I'd not be unhappy had I paid $12-15 for it. Happy to say it will find a home in my every day wine rack over summer.

They also have an $11 Reserva in the same label, will definitely have to give it a crack now.

Balthazar Marananga shiraz, 2010.

Lovely oak, lots of vanilla, little bit of leather, mulberry, blackberry, little bit of cherry, little bits of spice and mocha, awesome tanins, not too acidic, long finish - brilliant Barossa shiraz.

Port is good, but if you've started on wine from scratch, then it is always very hard. Hot / tangy sounds about right given its Portugese. Try an Aussie muscat or sweet sherry to start you off with.

Alternatively, grab a $10 of Cabernet Sauvignon and try that.

Personally I started on shiraz. I mean, I always drank sav blanc if the girls had it and I was getting pissed, but a bottle of Langmeil Valley Floor shiraz was the wine that made me go "Hey, this stuffs ok..."

Same for me. Amelie Eden Valley shiraz was the first time I tasted a wine and really thought 'Wow!'

Also, Langmeil is the shizz.
