Well there is a bar open somewhere at 0707 EST.

On another note lads I am currently trying to find something in particular, a bottle of Dom Perignon 1995. I am trying to get hold of a bottle for the better 1/2 as it's our 20th wedding anniversary in late march.

Yet to have any luck in Oz, currently as it stands my only option is sourcing from o/s. Given the taxes & shipping will be ridiculous it's not really an option. For those working in the industry & those who have contacts (Drewsta, SGL, Bazal), could you please keep an ear to the ground, I have a good idea of what it's worth & I'm happy to pay market value (I certainly don't want any favours) apart from trying to find one. If anyone hears could they pm me. I don't like my chances but you never know.

Cheers Drew, I'm a bit reluctant to purchase something like that off ebay (postage, assurance it actually what it is etc) I can get hold of a Moet & Chandon 1995 from their grand vintage collection, not being a champagne guy, how would this compare to other champagnes of this quality ?

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to the quality of champagne as I'll have a glass to glass and 1/2 tops not really my thing.

TBH I don't have the pallet to compare at that level. Baz or SGL would be better. I prefer the Taittinger Comtes de Blanc mainly because I've had a number of different vintages of it when at McWilliams and it was staggeringly good for me. Dom has the name, but that's not always a sign of quality at that tier.

At that level, anything you get will exceed your expectations so whichever of the two you can get for cheaper would be worth it.

To be perfectly honest I don't rate Dom that highly. Don't get me wrong, it's good. However I remember being at a tasting of the 2002 and they had six bottles open....every one was different. Dom suffers a lot from bottle variation, which makes it tough to recommend at that price. The good stuff is genuinely brilliant, but a slightly off bottle is no better than Moet Grand Vintage. Dom (when good) is definitely much better, though.

1995 was a ripper vintage by champagne standards though, so a quality Dom will no doubt be excellent. Sadly I can't help with where to find one. I would suggest contacting Moet Hennessey and asking straight up.

Drew/SGL & Bazal

Thanks for the advice.

Already tried contacting them & awaiting a reply. Looks like I may have to continue searching and locate another 1995 vintage.

Cheers

Ballewindi Mornington Peninsula Syrah. Pretty fragrant, quite pure fruit on the nose, sappy, kinda pinot characters. It's not screaming syrah at me, but it's nice nonetheless

Mitolo Mill Road Shiraz 2012

Another stupid clearance. 2 for $15. Probably the best $7.50 shiraz of all time, which is no surprise given it's about $22 to begin with. Big fruit, tonnes of oak, thick heavy texture but soft tannins. Not the most exciting or original shiraz but you lot should definitely grab some.

Mitolo for $7.50 is criminal.

Had a Neil McGuigan The Shortlist GSM, '10 the other night. Spectacular specimen. Grenache predominantly, light in colour, lovely pepper from the shiraz towards the end - marvelous.

Opening a '09 Chinon tonight just because.

Who's the maker? I love Chinon....much maligned, for no good reason IMO. I think 2009 was a very good vintage in the Loire too.

My bottle is almost empty BTW. So drinkability is not an issue here

Peter Lehmann 15YO Rare Tawny. Tastes like a syrupy Amaretto. Bitter almond, caramel, and orange peel. Nice drink, though not for those who prefer their fortifieds very sweet.

Charles Joguet.

Its bloody good, TBH. 2009 was supposedly an amazing year for France, and this is really nice. Pepper, really nice fine tannin, cherry and rhaspberry, ever so slight flintyness? Great wine.

I don't mind what the fortified is as long as its not bland.
