Yeah mate!

Port; There are two kinds, really. Vintage Port and Tawny. Tawny is more common, it's been exposed to air already so it's essentially pre-aged and oxidised, which is why it pours a bit brown. Vintage port (or, confusingly, some makers call it vintage tawny thanks to origin control regulations) is single vintage, unoxidised port that retains a lot more fruit flavour and character. Tawny goes more towards the raisiny kind of flavours. I prefer a vintage port myself, but both are generally in my cupboard.

To be perfectly honest once you get outside the really cheap stuff I reckon it's impossible to get a bad Aussie port, just different styles

Brandy/Cognac; Personally I steer clear of brandy. Not that you can't get good ones, but I always figure you can pick up cognac for an extra $20 so why bother? Brandy and cognac are essentially the same thing, oak aged spirit distilled from grapes. But cognac is a single regional expression of higher quality (and with some technical differences). Generally cognac has three major age classifications;

VS=Very Special. The Youngest brandy in the blend is aged two years
VSOP=Very Special Old Pale. Youngest brandy four years old, but the average can be up to 20
XO=Extra Old. Youngest brandy six years, average can be well over 20

The four major makers you'll usually find are Hennessy, Remy Martin, Courvoisier and Martell. I prefer Martell, but all are very good. If you do go for a brandy, look for a VSOP or Napoleon labelled bottle.

It can be depending on the blend. Most is off-dry. It should specify on the label actually.

Don't know if you saw my recommendation before, but try this:

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_767663/bleasdale-fortis-et-astutus-20-year-old-rare-liqueur-tawny

'Fortis et Astutus' is the Potts' family motto that translates into 'Bold and Crafty'. These qualities have been somehow applied to this 20 year old Rare Liqueur Tawny with magnificent character and skill. The wine has matured and concentrated slowly in old brandy kegs stored in the roof of the original part of the winery built in 1880. The wine itself displays complex aromas of dried figs and oranges, spices and roasted nuts, while the palate follows with a dense and intense character that leads to a persistent but subtle sweet finish.

I might give Cognac a go. I asked them when they are having a Cognac tasting and they said I just have to turn up every day as they dont plan it. Typical DM.

Its bloody expensive stuff.

I got a Chivas Regal Lochan Ora liqueur for Christmas and although it was nice, it was way too sweet for mine.

One for the bottle-o-s:

Are there any local wines that you are aware of that are exported to France? Notably in the hunter region but not necessarily.

Maverick "Twins" Cab Sauv Merlot Cab Franc Petit Verdot. Very much based on Bordeaux wines, it suffers a bit from having Merlot in a second billing as most Australian wineries can't make Merlot for shit. Missing a fair whack of middle palate.

Looks like we'll be booking into a day trip to the Yarra when down next month & into April.

So long as we go to De Bortoli, Yering & Chandon I'll be happy. Appears that most of the day tours go to the big 3.

Think that's where they stop for lunch. Got a feeling there will be a few cases being delivered back up to the GC.
