Ainslie Cellars, Plonk, Jim Murphys at Fyshwick (not the airport, they suck). Nebbiolo might be an issue though, he only made 200 cases. And I think only 100 cases of the blend, which also has Chardy this year

His Sangiovese is outstanding too btw

2013 Elefante Tempranillo Shiraz...

Maybe it's benefiting from being the second bottle, but f**k this is good shit. Great black fruit, really fine tannins, vanilla/choc oak, smoked paprika (like, really strong smokey pepper). Absolute f**king belter for $12

Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne 2012. Very much a wine in the classic vein of Burgundy. Everything is subtle, yet nothing is missing. Bright red fruit, savoury finish, neat fine tannins, a great all rounder for anyone wanting to enter the French wine scene.

Short Sheep Mudgee Shiraz Cab, 2012.

Nice American oak, slight chalky tannin, got that typical Mudgee flavour to a red, but lovely red fruit and easily drunk. Nicely done, by the small 'micro winery'.

Castellare di Castellina 2013 Chianti Classico.

Bought this from one of my favourite bottle shops in Sydney, Sixty Darling Street in Balmain, after the new guy / part owner did one of the best up-sells I have ever witnessed (go in for 1 bottle of Champagne, walk out with 2 bottles of Champagne, 3 Chianti's, and a 1982 PX Sherry). Kind of thankful now, the new bloke there seriously knows his stuff.

95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo. I'll be honest and say that blend means relatively little to me, since all my Chianti drinking has either not described its content or was 100% Sangiovese. A very full bodied style, meaty and thick but still with that classic sour cherry hit. A high quality drink.

d'Arenberg The Custodian '11 Grenache.

For a shit vintage, it goes ok. The fruit lacks the punch of other years IMHO, but it is smooth, has traditional grenache qualities to it and a nice, long finish.

Easy drinking on a Saturday night.

I like them a lot too. ATM Teusner's range is probably my favourite. The right mix of excellent winemaking, diverse styles and unique branding.

I had a Dead Arm last Christmas; '06 vintage. It kicked arse.

Bellarine Bay Petit Verdot Merlot Shiraz. Strange blend, and kind of suffers from not having a heavier hitting red in the blend (or at least having a bigger Shiraz portion in the wine). Quite sweet, lightning quick finish.

The 2nd bottle is officially a regifting wine.

90 minutes (ish) later. More Shiraz than Syrah, Orange/Central Ranges proves that there is an option to making Shiraz that isn't from the classics of Barossa or Hunter Valley. Subtle as granite, but tough as a pillow. A seriously strange mix.

Personally, after trying straight varietals from the area and blends, I think Orange is Australia's answer to Cotes du Rhone for lack of better description. GSM red blends are Orange's calling card in my opinion, but it will take getting some old hard heads away from "classic" French varietals before progress is made in NSW. White Cotes du Rhone white blends are still 100% embeded in McLaren Vale, and require a serious challenger to Chateau Tabhilk Marsanne.

Agree re: Orange. Really enjoyed my, albeit shot time I spent out there.

Got one of these (2010) from my daughter as a bday pres, really looking forward to cracking it.

2010 Keith Tulloch Shiraz Viognier. Juicy, chewy shiraz, good whack of viognier. Blackberries, bramble, that apricot jam viognier hit...rich, velvet smooth, a little stalky with a very long, soft but powerful finish. Just outstanding, very glad I gave this last one a few years.

I'd love to see if it improves over the night but to be perfectly honest I've gone through it in about 90 mins...

Give the Dead Arm as long as you can. One of the biggest wines in Australia....they're absolute monsters!

Initially I thought another 5-6 so it's 12. Well how wrong was I D'Arnberg notes it will reach it's full potential in 2030.

Interesting read about how they came up with the "Dead Arm".

Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly affects vineyards all over the world. Often vines affected are severely pruned or replanted. One half, or an ?arm? of the vine slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side, while low yielding, display amazing intensity
