Bodegas Toro Albalá Don Pedro Ximinez Gran Reserva 1986. From the Montilla-Moriles region, so officially not a sherry. Super concentrated sultana + golden syrup notes, with something akin to an aftertaste of Fads. Light finish of cigar and cinnamon sugar. Also has 350g of residual sugar, so come at me diabetes!

An absolute ball tearer of a fortified wine.

Scarborough NV Pinot. Really good wine, all cherry, slippery smooth and great body without the acidity that throws a lot of young Aussie pinots out of balance

Hessian Skies McLaren Vale Merlot, 2014.

Nice, juicy, plummy, no mid palate sink hole, enjoyable and smooth. Its not on varietal, for merlot, but its a decent quaffer.

Warm climate Aussie merlot is garbage. There are a few decent cool climate ones, but not many still

2003 Viking Grand Shiraz. 100% Marananga fruit, IMO just about the best part of the Barossa. Was worried about this one, because theoretically it's about 3 years past what all the reviews give it as a drinking window. Once again they don't know shit :p Almost flawless, just a bit of bottle funk that will probably blow off anyway. Heavy, intricate dark fruit with a dollop of sweetness from the small parcel of viognier they added. Loads of dark bittersweet chocolate, absolutely no tannins left. Winner.

Especially good after I melted my glandular affected brain with law exam studies...ffs.

2012 Nick O'Leary Pyrenees Shiraz. Nick had a problem with yields for his Canberra District shiraz in 2012, so he made this as well. Typical of his style, medium bodied, oozes class with bold black fruits and licorice/anise...but there's a gamey, chewy cured meat kind of savouriness to this one as well. This style of shiraz is the future.

Only issue is I'm still f**ked, so two glasses and I'm out for the night.... :(

I know that feeling. Had some Tassie sparkling and Eden Valley Shiraz at work before heading home, but not feeling great so leaving it at that.

I love wine, but my consumption is reaching levels that I think might be unhealthy :(

I generally have between 1-2 bottles a week as an average...with at least 3, if not 5 or 6 alcohol free days now that I've cut beer out for winter.

That said, I've been sick as shit with this glandular so that's way down until this week. I've been in bed by like 830 most nights in the last fortnight

Drinking and glandular is not a good idea, as an FYI and speaking from experience

I generally have 2 or maybe 3 a week max. I barely touch beer due to the wine consumption. My issue is having AFD's, as I don't think the volume is the issue but the consistency.

AFD's are the reason I can score fifties and you can't :p

Did four local wineries today for release week. Helm, Four Winds, Clonakilla, Eden Road. Wanted to do one or two more but Ken Helm can talk  (it's always worth it though!)

Helm Premium Riesling 2015: Beautiful balance, lemon/lime, mild acidity, incredible length. Blows any SA riesling of the water I don't care what you say.
Helm Classic Dry Riesling 2015: Very, very dry, loads of acid. Very lean, structural riesling, but absolutely brilliant.
Helm Central Ranges Riesling 2014: Quite Germanic. Soft acid, already slightly developed flavours, fuller body than the others and very citrusy. The 2015 sold out before he could even label it, interestingly.
Helm Half Dry Riesling 2015: Very much half dry, and yet not sweet. Full bodied, candied citrus flavours, insanely fresh and fragrant.
Helm Cabernet 2011: Poor vintage locally, but Ken did really well. Classic cabernet flavours, maybe a little sweet...overcompensation in ripeness for a poor vintage? Still a good wine regardless.
Helm Premium Cabernet 2009: Absolutely brilliant. From an all time great vintage. Very left bank bourdeaux on the nose, riper in the mouth obviously but heading that way.

Four winds we basically went for the pizza :p But the riesling was excellent value, as was the sangiovese, and the shiraz was genuinely very good at $30.

Clonakilla Sem Sav Blanc 2015: Weirdly dry, but not in a bad way. Green as anything, sharply acidic, but really nicely fresh and zesty. Probably needs to calm down a little but looks like a good wine.
Clonakilla Riesling 2015: Almost the equal of the Helm Premium, although a different style. Much drier, more acidic and steely. Classic Canberra riesling lime juice character.
Clonakilla Viognier Nouveau 2015: Still manages a medium body despite zero oak maturation. Quality wine. Apricot, soft but still obvious acidity, a hint of nutty complexity.
Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2014: Might genuinely be the best Hilltops they've done. Medium body, the prettiest nose of any shiraz I've had in the world. Cherry, pepper, chocolate oak, violet, rose, soft tannins.
Clonakilla O'Riada Shiraz Viognier 2013: I've got a six pack of this already. Happy with how it's going. Starting to approach the perfumed, ethereal flagship wine. Similar body and stucture, just toned down.
Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2014: Just awesome. Cherry, floral, spicy nose. So complex...cherry, pepper, rose, licorice, gamey backbone, very little oak intrusion, beautiful balance. Worth every cent.
Clonakilla Syrah 2013: Outstanding vintage, wow wine. The syrah characters of the SV distilled and amplified, the fruit and pepper especially, with more obvious licks of oak. An unbelievable wine

Eden Road had 20 wines on so I couldn't be f**ked taking too much detail about each  The Via NV Tumbarumba Sparkling was a winner, steely, puckeringly dry but brilliant for it. The Canberra Riesling was outstanding, classic local style. Single vineyard Tumbarumba chardy and pinot were all excellent but the stand out reds were the Canberra shiraz and Gundagai cabernet...

Now I get to go drink aged cool climate wines at dinner :p

Anyone tried the Anvers Warrior Shiraz 2009? Got it from my youngest daughter on sunday. I've got them (family) well trained any bday or celebration I always rake in a few bottles.

Clonakilla Syrah 2013 Agree baz, had it a few times and always leaves a smile on the dial.
