Dark Corner Durif Shiraz. Made by Casella Bros, so a good chance there is a little bit of Don Mackay in this bottle. Super ripe, deadset you could convince people this is Tawny in a blind tasting.

Chalkboard Heathcote Lagrein. For a pack of absolute no hopers the merch team very rarely do something right. Cherry, plum, mulberry, lavender, vanilla oak, a bit of olive savouriness....really good for $17. So much so that the bottle was empty after 2 hours.

Paul Bara Comtesse Marie de France Grand Cru Champagne. Time for something a bit special for my last day at McCain. Very fine bubbles, lemon curd + red apple notes, and a honey nougat finish.

Bay of Fires Pinot Noir Chardonnay NV. To be overly simplistic, this is like drinking a Granny Smith apple. Very crisp and without a hint of sweetness. Finishes off with a good hit of Beurre Bosc pear. If you want to introduce people to what Australian sparkling can be (other then Yellow or Jacobs Creek PNC) this is really a great way to spoil them.

Costco can be pretty awesome. Magnums of Blue Pyrenees Cabernet and Cab Shiraz Merlot for 19 bucks. Also picked up a wine from Castillon I'm keen to try and had to be physically restrained from buying bulk Rieussec Sauternes for 50 bucks

I don't think it's the wines, per se. I think it's just that, like Clare reds, something about the process or the terroir or something expresses itself and I pick up on it particularly

Fair enough :) I get that with Mudgee reds. There's a heavy, muddy texture that I dislike a lot.

2006 Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet...this is my third bottle over the last three years, supposed to be bang in its drinking window

Great nose, very appealing, rich black fruit dominates. Very front heavy, but surprisingly flat fruit after the nose. Huge mid palate hole, short sweet finish with very little balance about it.

Might improve after some air and no doubt the fruit will come out more, but the mid palate hole isn't going to go away. Classic Coonawarra cabernet really, overrated and missing what cabernet is about
