2008 Penfolds Bin 389.

A big, brooding thing that takes a while to get into it's stride.

Nose is eucalyptus, menthol, wild black berries, a little flinty.

Surprisingly little oak for a Penfolds flagship wine, but all the other hallmarks are there. Big tannins, big ripe fruit, backed up by a hint of menthol and graphite and a touch of leather. There's not a lot of subtlety but plenty of power and length.

It really is a classic Aussie wine, it's just a shame they price it so far out of where it should be. $90+ for the last vintage ffs. A top wine but it isn't worth that for the Penfolds house style

Two bottles tonight. Hence shorter notes!

2010 Wynn's Black Label Cabernet. Classic Wynn's, loads of black fruit, menthol, the tannins are still obvious and very drying. It's still quite closed even with a decant and a run through the Vinturi, I'd say it still has at least three to five years before it reaches its' peak.

2009 Grant Burge Cameron Vale Cabernet. This was the year they had a belter for cabernet and sent down fruit that would normally be destined for the Shadrach (a 98 point wine in this vintage). Bought six at $14 or so a bottle. More obvious age than the Wynn's, but probably drinking better right now. It's much more expansive especially on the nose, the fruit more obvious and riper, tannins sitting in the background. While it hasn't had the life that the Wynn's will due to the vintage, the quality of the Shadrach fruit is clear and it'll hold for another few years yet. Not bad for sub-$15!

Roomie, brother and I had three wines tonight.

2010 Meerea Park Hell Hole Semillon. Single vineyard Hunter semillon. Classic aged sem, toasty, lemon curd, honey... still steely as f**k and probably has a few years in it if you happen to have some.

2013 Centennial Vineyards Barbera. Delicious. Fruit comes from Orange. Mid weight, very savory almost tomato fruit, plenty of fine tannins, tobacco. Good quality, tasty wine.

2010 Teusner The Dog Strangler Mataro. Holy Mcf**k. I almost regret opening this one, but it's definitely at its best...Blood plum, raspberry, violet, an entire cupboard of winter spices, chocolate oak, a hint of leather and earth. An absolute ball tearer and in the conversation for the best wine I've had this year. Very keen to see how the remaining half of the bottle goes tomorrow.

I know bugger all about wines (and keeping it that way) but what the f**k has graphite got to do with taste?

Do you compare it to the taste of lead out of a pencil?

Teusners Mataro is the best I've ever had.

Gee whiz tram driver traminer riesling

$12 at liquorland currently.

I’m a big fan of this one. Tastes way older than it is and for $12 is a bargain.

One of my faves.

Except the pricks have deleted it. I suppose it wasn't a big mover, the decision to label it 'traminer riesling' was a mistake IMO. People equate that with sweet rubbish.

Should have used the full 'gewurtztraminer'

Yeah but most people don't look at the label if it doesn't grab them straight away. First impression of traminer riesling for most=sweet rubbish.

It's certainly been deleted from our range. Different state though.

Yep long gone from our shop, didn’t even move until they reduced the price and suddenly it moved, even though it’s been out for a while now I only took the ticket off the shelf last week because I got sick of putting it on the gap scan.
