Whats the big deal with greg bird as a 5/8? Sure he can defend....but you might aswell put fatso lyon there for all the attacking spark he has

Whats with you and bagging anasta all the time? Wing is a great player, but he won't get the halfback position. If Bird is the 5/8, who will organise things ? Even with the roosters last yr, wing didn't play a halfbacks role. Anasta did majority of the work in the halves just like fittler did in 02 when we won the GF.

You should read what I am responding to. The idiot is claiming Wing isn't up to scratch as he is now a South Sydney player. I am highlighting that Wing has performed at SOO level not like the Roosters players picked last season.. Tupou and Anasta were a waste of space.

bird isnt even certain of playing 5/8th for cronulla let alone NSW.

lyon, gas or bird are all stop gaps.

the only real 5/8ths are barrett or anasta, mullen is still young.

the best option was mentioned before, monaghan 7, and barrett at 6.

the spot is open and really depends on form. orford has lots of pressure on him without monaghan to help out and every time orford has looked like getting picked for origin, hes choked.

if the sharks have a good season then maybe kimmorley or bird.
anasta will be be up there as well.

what if wing kills it for souths and theyre in the top 4? sure he isnt a favourite but there arent any standouts and good form could see him get it.

wing in form is better than kimmorley

If Fulton has anything to do with it Lyon will captain NSW...and play at 6.

Bird offloads, draws in defenders, have a nice short kicking game and is one of the best one on one defenders in the league.. basically Anasta is a poor mans Greg Bird. Bird can play Lock easily but with O'Donnell coming back, Gallen impressing in his SOO debut and O'Meley most likely being picked if not injured they could push Bird to 6 to have all of them. Anyone that states Anasta is a better player than Bird needs their eyes tested.

Wing is probably the best defender out of all halfbacks in the comp, no need to hide him in the line- he tackles Props one on one. He has a sharp passing game, he has a consistent kicking game and with the ball in his hands against tired forwards, he is one of the best.

Wing/Bird wouldn't let anyone down..not like past combinations.

It wont matter who your halves are when your all standing under the goal posts waiting for Thurston to kick at goal.

Anasta wasn't impressive in origin last yr, but if he can continue to play like he did in the last 8 weeks, then there is a chance he can make it, his not out of the picture. Anasta got the best of bird on both occasions when the roosters came up against them. Not taking anything away from bird, i loved the passion he brought to the blues with his team mate gallen. It wasn't all promising signs when the blues won the third game though. Lets remember also there wasn't that many points scored considering the injury toll that hit QLD.

I can't see how a wing/ bird combination will work. He doesn't have a good kicking game.

I think Anastas game will go to another level now with Fittler guiding him full time.
Will be interesting to see.... he showed glimpses of it last year in the last 8 rounds.
He should have been a superstar already but the dogs didnt need to use him as such as their game was based around forwards and Sherwin.
Wing played his best footy as second reciever or when he slot into dummy half...even Adrian Morley has joked that Wing is the dumbest footballer he knows in a football sense (Wing was an economics student )..thats a big call.
Even his vision out of dummy half was questionable when you see guys like Farah and Smith. Very explosive thjoguh and always a great foil for Buderus in origin..he would lift the tempo dramatically at his best.

Thurston mite not get the number 7. He will be injured for the first month and Cooper Cronk is looming.

I hear a lot of names being bandied about. I'll add two more to the mix. Mitchell Pearce and Jamie Soward. Yes I am a Dragons supporter but I can See the Roosters and Dragons being the big improvers this year and much of that will be on the backs of these two. If NSW were willing to pick Mullen for SoO 1 then they can have no qualms with considering either of these two. Personally I think they'll go with Orford and Bird.

If Pearce stays on the field he will be half a chance. Soward needs to learn the meaning of the word "team". If they can teach him that it is ok to kick for someone other than himself and that passing the ball occasionally instead of dummying every time is not a bad thing, then he will be up there as well, however that will be a tough ask.

It'll be interesting to see what Wallace pulls out playing halfback for the Broncos.

He ripped up the Cowboys last year when playing first receiver so it'll be interesting to see what happens when Lockyer is in the side.

Considering the names being thrown up NSW are well and truely farked in the halves. We're just lucky QLD lack depth in the forwards.

Anasta is a Lock in 5/8th's clothes. I can honestly say that NSW don't have a traditional 5/8th running around in the NRL.

QLD 3 NSW 0 for mine

Define "Traditional 5/8". Lockyer was a fullback but was switched to 5/8. Is he a traditional 5/8? Does it make him less effective if he isnt? No it doesnt.

People on the forum have been describing Mullen and Carney as "natural" 5/8s which I dont buy, reason being is that I think they could play either 1st or 2nd reciever without a problem.

I think that the modern game requires something more out of a 5/8 than the ability to pass/kick/run. Todays effective 5/8 are more like a 2nd halfback or a 2nd lock, depending on how dominant the teams halfback is. In the past NSW have used the "dominant half, running 5/8" combo but with the loss of the likes of Johns, Fittler and Barrett I think the game plan for the Blues needs to change a little.
