Maybe they need to enter the perch or rod rule. They may know what those are. No use telling about metres, they'll think the traffic wardens have entered the ground.

Or perhaps they keep them back a furlong.

Looked like 10 metre markings on the field. Plus the ref was French, and they practically invented the metric system. ;-)
