Are you a supporter of the game of RL or just a selfish fan of your club only?

Discuss.
when the NE merger happened I did not follow them as closely
but I did help out with our local junior league and follow our local comp a lot more

if you classify that as selfish so be it

Well said mate.

Those who say that they would never watch League again if their team was cut from the comp are either:
a. Liars
b. Brain dead
c. Wearing their shorts too tight

This is the sort of statement i would expect from one of those supporters who changes teams depending how their current team is going at the time.

Or worse still has four favourite teams.

I would absolutely die if Storm folded. Think thats more unlikely now as the years go on.
If they relocated, I would still follow them.
I love the game too much not to watch it again.

Well you couldnt be further from the truth mate. Been a Knights supporter and a Knights supporter only since 88.

However I am not stupid enough to believe that the world stops spinning just because the Knights arnt in the top comp anymore. If your happy to go and watch fumbleball or yawnion or netball or whatever just because the Sharks are gone then pity is all I have to offer.

As Ive stated before, the game is far bigger than any one club.

And our passion is bigger than the game.

Who said if your club was cut you'd watch another sport anyway?

Do you think that the Bears supporters who are right now fighting to get their team back into the comp, walked away from the sport? Is their passion any less than yours because they didnt?

Dunno. Maybe they stayed Bears supporters. And I think the decision is not merely based on passion, but personal choice.

Me, I love watching League. But I'll only make a point of watching my mob or a GF. Happily do other stuff when other games are on, only tuning in if I' have access to a radio. No Eels, maybe I'll take a spasmodic interest. But that's just me.

Either way, I don't think anyone has the right to slam the attitude of a fan whose club has just been punted.

And thats fair enough mate.

What Im calling out as bullsh*t here is the posters who are sprouting "Ill never watch a game of RL again if my team is gone". It may be gutting, your involvement may drop but can anyone here speak with any real truth and say that they will never watch another game of League?

I'm still gutted that Norths aren't playing. Throughout 35 seasons of watching this code, I have lost my 3 'second' teams. The Jets, the Bears and the Maggies. Luckily my first team remains. Still gutted at Norths absence - there are strong family ties to Norths.

Add NRL in front of the word 'League', and i'm d. loyal to the NSDRLFC and don't see the point of watching a comp that hasn't got a team to support.

I can't understand how supporters can actually expect their team to remain FOREVER in the premier competition in any sport?

I mean, forget RL for a second, look at almost every other major sport across the globe and the majority of competitions have relegation systems or teams simply merge/fold/relocate.

It's part of being involved in professional sport. In some competitons, even the players don't get much of a say on where they play.

The harsh reality is, Sydney has an over staurated RL market. Sooner or later, the NRL will force some teams to merge/relocate. When that time comes, some supporters may be lost forever, some for a period of time, but time heals all wounds.

These relocations/mergers/raising of new teams, if done correctly, will bring more revenue and more crowds to the sport, which will justify the tough decisions made.

Sucks to be a fan of a Sydney team, but such is life.

If St George were culled from the NRL I wouldn't support another team under any circumstances. My interest in that comp would be minimal. That being said, I would keep my interest at grass roots level because I'm a League supporter through and through .. Rugby League IS football. I hate union, soccer and aussie rules.

I would still watch NRL, probably wouldn't support another team straight away. See if I get drawn to another team, and if so I would start supporting them. I'd still watch origin, I'd still watch test footy, and I'd definitely still watch NRL.

I have followed Parramatta for over 30 years with a passion.

If my team were to be given the flick, I would still watch RL with an interest, but I would not have the same passion for the game. My guess it would be the same with the majority of the fans.

My next door neigbour and friend was a die hard Bears fan, who played the game until his early 20's. He will not even watch State of Origin now days. When we talk football we talk about the 80's and 90's our era as kids and adults and I can so hear his passion for the Bears and I know I would almost be the same as him.

If it was just the game we supported, I am sure there would be many more fair weather fans, who would jump teams from year to year. I dont care who you support, pick a team and stick with them through thick and thin, share the up's and downs. Thats a real supporter in my books.

Cheers
Mark

There is no way I could ever 'dump' League as my sport. Look at the alternatives anyway: union, AFL, soccer. Not exactly inspiring stuff there.

If Newcastle was ever to be booted from the NRL, my support of the game would not go with them. I would still watch the NRL -albeit with a kind of a hollow feeling- but I would say my attention would focus on my local WA club moreso than I currently do.

And these people can walk away from league forever and follow a different sport, after all the market is saturated. There is nothing to understand. Such is life! Are you Ben Cousins love child?

I don't care how big the game is thats not my concern. I have other interests, life doesn't revolve around the NRL.

Knock yourself out.

Half of the wankers who say they will leave wont. I'm also yet to hear any feasible explanation as to why you would abandon the entire sport as opposed to just the NRL.

League has survived a long time, and it has survived clubs merging and folding. It will sure as hell survive the loss of nob jockeys like you.

I will always follow league. It is the sport I love. Clubs come second.

It isn't often I agree with Diablo, but he is spot on.
