Nice family atmosphere at Lidcombe but that velodrome track takes away the footy feeling imo.
Anyways it's fulltime 40-10 in SG Ball. Summary in previous post #517

This game has started. The men have arrived!

Fulltime WT 38 - 20

Left winger Tutonu Junior Wright looks like JAC. Goes hard.
Brandon Tumeth scores a crash ball try.
In the early period WT look the more well drilled, organised team. The Silktails look more like a Fijian touch footy team.
WT score fourth try try in 25min. Go the Tigers!
Clarke scores a double.
There's a lot of stoppages as players are staying down for head contact but guys... there's no vidoe ref :)
My man Tutonu Junior Wright scored a great try in the corner.
Tries aplenty now, this is awesome.
Late in the game now and WT have conceded some easy tries.
I think the Fijians are handling the heat better as we are dropping off tackles.
Fulltime and it ended up a messy affair.
No real standouts. Tumeth scored a couple of quality tries but he was hot and cold.

As predicted in Harold Matts, the Magpies flogged the Tigers 38-0

SG Ball progress score
Fulltime
Magpies 40 ~ Tigers 10

Callum McMenemy scoring quadruple meat pies, awesome for a centre. Tallyn Da Silva is a standout for both sides and has really put in an effort in the off season...very fit. He Scored a long range try beating Balmain's winger followed by a support play to score under posts.
Navren Willett scored late in first half. He is yet to get NRL fit as he has 7ft skinny legs and nothing else.
Cameron Kanaan continues to impress me. I've watched him a few times now and may have a big future. He has heaps of energy and commitment.
Jordan Miller is huge compared to the rest. Not many runs though and he looks sluggish...not NRL std for a while me think.
Kit not many minutes either.
I’m predicting Miller will never be NRL std.

My contact at Balmain told me that last wk both Harold Matt’s & sg ball coaches were told that they won’t be coaching the rep teams next season.Im liking Bronson Harrison coz he’s indicating he will make the hard decisions that Siro would not make when he was in charge of the Balmain juniors.

Did U you go and watch TSP? Nice avatar :)
Yes, rooster lad from work and I attended to take the opportunity to immerse ourselves in footy atmosphere, support players, chill out and enjoy the games.

We have some bloody good juniors, Zac Clarke and Da Silva.

At half time we went over to the silver tails change rooms to listen to the half time speech from coach. Very interesting.

The Silvertail backs, at times we just couldn’t handle them. They were amazing. They can change direction without any stutterances.

Favourite encounters otherwise:

Pole, Galvin, many of the womens team, Robbie, Noddy, Fainus, the game manager some old boys, met some parents of players.

Balmain, injuries and unavailability’s, they were Brave.

I saw a head high by the magpies, on video too. I shan’t snitch, uncalled for though.

I saw Feledy helping out with equipment, doing the hard work in 35 degrees.

A hard core group of players didn’t leave just after the signing, but stayed to watch the games and made themselves available for late fans. When we walked past them, they were watching the silver tails game very closely and intently.

The players were very well behaved, seemed happy to be there and with each other.

A few of the women and I agreed that the womens origin should be played immediately before the mens games, to increase exposure and we discussed our mutual respect for the womens international rugby.

$5 for a sausage sandwich, but instead of the stingy Bunnings thing, 2 sausages and two slices of bread and heaped onion. As much as they could load. Coke $3.

I didn’t actually see any grog etc.

The lidcombe facilities are ancient, but that’s part of the experience.

All of the official staff were very good and friendly.

Richo was around, apparently working in the canteen for a spell earlier on, but I missed him.

Downsides were parking ( had to run the gauntlet, lucky I wasn’t booked), probably needed sunblock stations.

Crowd varied throughout the day.

There was a sense of brotherhood between the Balmain and Magpie players. It’s awesome to have both clubs represented.

Judging by Richo's wasteline, the kitchen would've been a great place to hide.
The place looked very much a family affair so the lack of grog is a good thing. But not for me
ha ha :)
Yeah, I saw many re-introductions and people surprised and happy to see old friends.

Rooster lad and I were wondering about.

There’s some intensity in these junior games.

At one point near to us behind the goals, there’s a Balmain staff member and he’s on his phone to his hq or whatever and he’s providing a commentary of what he’s seeing from that angle.

I mean i don’t know how this info makes it onto the field, but anyway.

I had some health concerns for the players in the heat.

The silver tails coach, his half time speech worked wonders. He’s not carrying on like a Bellamy spoilt brat dick, he’s just pointing out technical improvements they should make. Such as getting under the ball in tackles, stepping up intensity, focus on WT player positions and discipline.

The game was all over by then, but he wasn’t crapping on about a miracle.

They were very vocal those Fijian players.

I was thinking about the heat too TSP because a few were laboring. It sort explains why our massive unit Miller looked unfit. The big boys feel the heat more.
Sounds like you had a great day mate... Well done.
Just think what you've been able to do with your money, some folks prefer to throw it down the throat of a pokie machine or booze up and not remember what they did.
In my younger days...daze, it was the later :O

Yeah, for old club statesmanship,
the magpies seeming to dominate the visuals at least at the ground over the Tiges. But if it was held at LO, it might be the opposite.

Some bonus photos for you TM:

I had the opportunity to attend, so I took it. Free entry to members.

Noddy isn’t that diminutive once you get up close.

I asked Pole and told me his name was sounded out “Po-Lay “ with the proper emphasis on the second syllable.

He liked the question.

Fss, he’s looking very powerful and ominous.

Our club is more diverse than the United Nations, plenty of older people, disabled, young kids and even a few dogs got in somehow. Pet members I guess.

Great stuff mate.
In another thread I commented that we lack an intimidator, a real alpha dog that takes no prisoners sort of player.
An example is JWH or the Inflictor Radley at their prime.
Our boys can be nice off the field but once they are playing they need to show some mongrel.
The closest we've had lately to this was Jimmy the Jet but unfortunately he was done and dusted by the time we got him.
You mentioned Pole. He is a big unit but he needs to be the alpha dog on the paddock. I don't mean fighting, I mean controlled aggression, hard tackling and not giving an inch.
I think Pole is capable.
Twally and the other forwards are cuddle monsters.
Bateman is the man racking up heaps of fantasy points. He's aggressive when he is riled up but a tad too small to be the alpha dog.
Maybe you can go to one of their training sessions TSP and give them one of the ol "Roy" face slappin sessions :)

Is Robbie Mears still coaching H Matt’s?
Robbie was a good hooker back in the day hey.
He ended up playing a cameo role with the Mittagong Lions where my late brother had administration job.
Of course he coached the Maggies HM Cup winners in '22.
He also had a gig last year with the NSW City Under-16s.
Someone else may know what he's up to now, like being an assistant somewhere???
@RHYTHM AND STEALTH or one of the regulars on here maybe know.
Tony Bazouni is coaching the Balmain U17's this year.
Maggies is Stephen Isdale.

If you go to the 2024 WT Coaches thread I posted up all the coaches for this year, post #18 :)
Mears would’ve coached the wests magpies Harold Matt’s side that were champs in ‘22 whereas Bazouni is currently the coach of the struggling Balmain Harold Matt’s.
