ROY Hodgson has been handed an instant boost as the new Liverpool manager after being told he will not have to sell prize assets Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, despite the club's financial difficulties.

Supporters had feared the ex-Fulham boss would have to sell the duo this summer to help service debts of almost STG400 million ($710 million).

But chairman Martin Broughton assured Hodgson he will not have to offload any players.

"Players are not for sale,'' said Broughton. "We don't need the money and we don't have to sell them because of the debt.''

Hodgson, who is not allowed to return to Fulham to sign any of his former players as part of his severance deal from the London club, admits he is facing one of the biggest challenges of his long managerial career but cannot wait to get started.

He has not discussed his transfer budget yet, but is expected to make several signings and knows he will come under immediate pressure to stop the rot at Anfield after replacing Rafael Benitez. The Spaniard quit Anfield last month after six years following a disappointing season that saw them finish seventh in the table.

"I expect the club and supporters to crave success and it's my job to make sure we deliver when it matters and not let them down,'' he said.

He said he will speak to Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in the next week to discuss what went wrong on the pitch last season, and is determined he has the ability to transform the fortunes of the club.

Liverpool were the pre-eminent club in English football during the 1970s and 1980s. But they were last crowned champions of England in 1990 and have not won the domestic title in the Premier League era.

Hodgson, 62, who has signed a three-year contract, said: "The number one priority is always the team. I want to help them do better and get back into the Champions League where the club has always been. My work will be on the field with the players and the training ground. I want to be a football manager and coach.''

Earlier he was heralded as the "right man for the job,'' by club captain Gerrard while Carragher, the vice captain, said "his appointment has given us all a lift.''

Manager of the year Hodgson joins Liverpool after a successful spell at Fulham, guiding their Premier League rivals to the final of the Europa Cup in May. The previous year he took them to seventh on the EPL table.

"This is the biggest job in club football and I'm honoured to be taking on the role of manager of Britain's most successful football club,'' said Hodgson.

Hodgson was Liverpool's first choice despite a host of other names being mentioned and media reports said it cost Liverpool two million pounds to win the release of the Englishman from his contract at Craven Cottage.

Former Liverpool stars also welcomed the appointment and hoped for a new era of stability and success at the club.

"The club needs a steadying influence and Roy will provide that,'' said former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson.

"He's done a fantastic job at Fulham and has a wealth of experience having managed all over Europe.

Former Reds striker John Aldridge said Hodgson would "fit the bill perfectly'' at Anfield and win the respect of the squad.

"His experience is exceptional, his CV is very good and the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will be delighted to have Roy in charge,'' he told Sky Sports News TV channel.

Hodgson had been linked with England after their disappointing World Cup campaign under Fabio Capello, but negotiations were already at an advanced stage with the Merseysiders who moved to close the deal with speed.

Hodgson has less than a month to get to know his players and prepare them for a Europa League third qualifying round first-leg tie on July 29.

He is at least familiar with the prospect, having guided Fulham from that starting point all the way to the final this season, eventually losing to Atletico Madrid.

The former Switzerland manager then has to begin the task of strengthening a squad which is severely lacking strength in depth.

However, with the club in debt to the tune of 350 million pounds, he will be severely retricted in terms of spending power.

Even so his priority is to find a left-back, as Emiliano Insua is the only specialist in the first-team squad, and much-needed support for Torres in attack.

Very happy with this.

As i said earlier, it had to be either Kenny or Roy and really.. Kenny was never an option in the scheme of things.

Happy for Roy. He knows the EPL well and seeing as we wont have much $$ to spend, we need a manager who can get the best of what little cash we have in the market, and seeing the transfers he did at Fulham, he is quite capable of this.

For his first bit of business he has signed Joe Cole to replace Yossi.

You have also sold Insua so you have no left backs at the club. Also Gerrard is back and looking likely to stay as no one will pay the big bucks for him.

Torres is wanted by Chelsea to replace Drogba who is going to city.

Hodgson still hasn't been able to contact Mascherano, but he is on his hols and not due back for a week so we will see. He is angling at joining Inter though...

Thats it for Scouse news at the mo.

Why would Drogba go to City?

Pretty sure Chelsea have cooled their interest in Torres anyway (thank god).

Money. A huge pile of money. A pile so big you can see it from space.
It was just on the news this morning in the transfer rumour section. His agent has said something along the line of "Drogba wants a huge pile of cash for his last contract".

Apparently Chelsea offered 40 million for Torres which was rejected. Now Chelsea are about to come back with a 50 million offer. So the rumour goes. We will see though (not convinced myself).

Drgoba to City is basically a big load of sh*t they are reporting..

Torres wont leave Liverpool.

Signed Danny Wilson this morning. Former Rangers centre back and looks to be a good young player.. Its a position that worried Liverpool last year with Agger never playing and Skrtel hit and miss.

Sounds like a good buy, alas i havent seen him player, only reading reports.

its no secret City wanted Dzeko but he doesn't want them, not surprised to see them throw big money at anyone but I'd be surprised if Drogba would go

Lol, he want a big money deal. Isnt he already on well over 100 000 pounds a week? Get some perspective Drogba, that is plenty of money to set yourself up for life, more than most earn in a year.

Footballers are dicks

Liverpool are paying Cole 90,000 pounds a week

Gooners offered him 80,000 and Spurs only offered him 65,000 but also offered him a signing on fee.

Despite all the media releases he put out, it just got down to the money

From what the papers said West Ham offered more for Cole but hey there papers.
Who'd know?
I think Coles not a bad player but he's no better than Yossi.
A change of clubs for both of them may be a good thing but if things dont work out for them at their new clubs where to then?
If I was a player and offered ten thousand pounds a week more to play for one club rather than another youd have to consider it.Be telling fibs if you didnt consider it.

Can't imagine West Ham offering over 90k per week for Cole somehow. I'd prefer Yossi personally, a lot more consistent than Joe..

Think it's fair to say that Torres' injury will kill any chance he has of leaving Liverpool. Ffs lets hope he can put together a full campaign!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/02/liverpool-takeover-kenny-huang-rbs

The battle for ownership of Liverpool has returned to the spotlight with reports that the Chinese tycoon Kenny Huang is in negotiations with Royal Bank of Scotland to take control of the club.

Huang, who is partnered by one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the Far East, is determined to seize control before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, according to the Times.

The current owners, the Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett, took over little more than three years ago but put the club up for sale in April and appointed Martin Broughton, the British Airways chairman, to oversee any deal.

Huang was first linked with a buyout at Liverpool two years ago. Sources close to the businessman have reportedly said that he is keen to complete a deal so that the manager, Roy Hodgson, can be given extra funds to sign much-needed players this month.

On the field, Joe Cole's debut ended in defeat yesterday when Liverpool lost 1-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Hodgson fielded a strong side, including Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson, while Fabio Aurelio was named on the bench after re-signing for the club today.

Mönchengladbach, who had arranged the match at Borussia-Park as part of their 110th anniversary celebrations, made the breakthrough in the eighth minute. The Algerian Karim Matmour took advantage of some poor play by Daniel Ayala inside the area and produced a powerful finish. Liverpool had to wait until the 56th minute for their first real chance, when Cole's low drive was parried. The former Chelsea player was withdrawn nine minutes later. Although Liverpool's David Amoo headed narrowly wide, Mönchengladbach deserved their win.

Signed Poulsen and Jones!

Poulsen is an interesting buy! Hopefully it means we never see Lucas in the starting 11 again! If anyone watched the Serie A last season, could they perhaps let us know how he went for Juventus?

Jones will be our reserve goalie! Will only play League cup games and replace Reina if he gets injured.
