Yet another Triple J Hottest 100

Ive never heard a list like this one on JJJ before, but then again I am a radio flicker, will flick through the talk and crappy songs station to station til I find something I like and then start again.

The first ever Triple J Hottest 100 in 1989 was actually the hottest 100 songs of all time. They did it every year up until 1992 IIRC (wiki may help here) when they started doing the hottest 100 songs released that year. Every 10 years they have a hottest 100 of all time...last one was, obviously, in 1999. Funnily enough, not a lot of difference between the 1999 top 10 and this one.

Thats interesting to know, cheers. They are user voted right? Even the yearly hottest 100? Or do the producers set it up and choose the top 10 themselves (or even top 100?)

Thats an interesting thought actually, if you had to pick 1 song that you think could crack the all time top 10 in the last 10 years what would it be? Id have to think if I could find a top 10'er from the last decade.

Can you maybe tell me what is good about that ratm song?

You have to remember that the song came out in 1992, rap with screaming and guitars had not really been seen or heard. Morello's guitar effects were also groundbreaking for the time too.

This was in an era of leather wearing glam hair metal saturation. Bands like Nirvana and RATM, Pearl Jam, RHCP "rescued" music whether it was for the better or worse, if you look at it from certain viewpoints musical diversity boomed around then...i guess.

Well Blind Freddy, that is a well articulated argument and even though it will be a song I just can never 'get' I think you have a good point of view on the grand scheme of things and the music of the time.

simo,

each to his own-you're dead right.
i liked and agreed with blind freddy's defence of the song.it was a bolt out of the blue as far as guitar based music goes.
i'd grown up on stones,queen,zep,purple,ac/dc and found the late 80's incredibly barren(apart from some obvious examples).(yeh there were metal bands but i thought most of that was about speed and trickery and had very little substance.(i'm listening to far more metal nowadays than i ever did in the 80's-90's)).
i can remember where i was when i first heard "killing in the name"-it was such an angry song and ballsy.(similarly "smells like teen spirit").the album was the same, chock full of angry riffy statements rather than songs, unlike most things that were available at the time.morello's guitar was wtf?!!?!
i can understand you not liking the song-it's simple and repetative.
but for many it was seen as groundbreaking and influential.

Angsty teens like 'Killing in the Name' for the same reason they like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Stirs up their rebellious sentiments. Stick it to the man!

those songs rocked first and foremost.

Well put and if I look at the perspective of how you and Blind Freddy have decribed it, I understand how many like it, however to me personally it is just awful and I was an angsty teen at the time (30 now).

Well Carch, I will agree with you in that who cares what they mean as long as you like them, that is music, just want it to sound good.

No REM.

Nice.

I was thinking no U2... nice.

REM have some great songs - I still dance around the house in my underwear to shiny happy people (cue visual).

Jeff Buckley wouldn't have made the top 100 if he was alive. 2nd most overrated artist ever (after U2).

Leonard Cohen's original was better .

They said something about 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' during the broadcast - apparently someone wrote 'Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit' on the wall of a house he was renting during a party once and Kurt quite liked it. He got kicked out of the house, and was later told Teen Spirit was a brand of deoderant...so no deep meaning in the end :)
