My favourite Queen song..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q1yyoe377k

That and Don't stop me now.
Great song. Another Brian track too ..!

Dad isn't a big Queen fan (doesn't dislike 'em, they just don't appeal to him that much), however he loves '39, and has done so since it came out over 30 years ago.

I was thinking no U2... nice.

REM have some great songs - I still dance around the house in my underwear to shiny happy people (cue visual).

Jeff Buckley wouldn't have made the top 100 if he was alive. 2nd most overrated artist ever (after U2).

Leonard Cohen's original was better .

Agreed 100%. I am not a fan of U2, and have never understood what people see in them. I rate them the most overrated band in the world today, and have done for many years now. Because of this, and the fact that everyone seems to get excited whenever U2 do or say or announce anything, I find myself disliking them more and more as time goes on. Even Bono's appearance in the 'Brüno' movie didn't help!

Thats interesting to know, cheers. They are user voted right? Even the yearly hottest 100? Or do the producers set it up and choose the top 10 themselves (or even top 100?)

Yep, they are and always have been user voted. The yearly hottest 100 is, apparently, the largest music survey in the world going on how many votes are cast.

Buckley was pretty famous before he died.
Grace was huge...plenty of chicks who do not listen to JJJ owned it.
The bloke was bloody talented.
sublime voice with amazing guitar technique...and that version is awesome.

as for his death you could say that about lots of the people in the list.
ie.
nirvana
queen
acdc..well sort of.
joy division
led zep
john lennon
wacko
hendrix
Johnny Cash
marley

I am surprised 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was only #6. It has countless times around the world been voted the greatest song of all time. I'll admit it's not my favourite Queen song ('The Show Must Go On' gets that title), but I do believe it is the greatest song ... if that makes sense.

I like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', and I would maybe have it in the top10, but #1?
And I'm with whoever it was who said they can't stand 'Imagine' (sorry, I forget who it was who said that here). I cannot stand any beatles songs or any of their solo songs. I don't know why, but I cannot stand them at all. They make me wanna kick in my radio speakers.

prob my fav queen song other than bohemian rhapsody is i want to break free love it

I liked that line about Jeff Buckley on the chaser a few years back
"Just one album mostly covers with more wailing than Japan does off our shores"

all of the others listed were huge before death.

he only got "pretty famous" after he died - beforehand was not exactly big, an up and comer perhaps, but would not rate in the top 20 artists of his era, probably not the top 50 even.

For him to get the kudos he gets whilst some better artists are ignored says a lot... at the end of the day chicks love dead girly-men....haven't you seen Twilight?

As for the "chicks own it" argument, are you serious? Cue Spice Girls/N'Sync/Ronan Keating/Lady Gaga......

The first ever Triple J Hottest 100 in 1989 was actually the hottest 100 songs of all time. They did it every year up until 1992 IIRC (wiki may help here) when they started doing the hottest 100 songs released that year. Every 10 years they have a hottest 100 of all time...last one was, obviously, in 1999. Funnily enough, not a lot of difference between the 1999 top 10 and this one.

How so? There's only four songs from the 1998 top 10 and this year's top 10, and interestingly 2 of this year's top 10 didn't make the top 100 at all in 1998, whilst 1 of that year's top 10 didn't make the top 100 this year.

1998 Hottest 100 of All Time:
1 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (1st in 2009)
2 Hunters & Collectors - Throw Your Arms Around Me (23rd in 2009)
3 Pearl Jam - Alive (25th in 2009)
4 Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye (7th in 2009)
5 Radiohead - Creep (13th in 2009)
6 Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven (10th in 2009)
7 Metallica - One (19th in 2009)
8 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (6th in 2009)
9 Metallica - Enter Sandman (31st in 2009)
10 Pearl Jam - Black (Not in the top 100 in 2009)

2009 Hottest 100 of All Time:
1 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (1st in 1998)
2 Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name (17th in 1998)
3 Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Not in the top 100 in 1998)
4 Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart (16th in 1998)
5 Radiohead - Paranoid Android (13th in 1998)
6 Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (8th in 1998)
7 Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye (4th in 1998)
8 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge (31st in 1998)
9 Foo Fighters - Everlong (Not in the top 100 in 1998)
10 Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (6th in 1998)

And here's the first ever Hottest 100 in 1989, also an "of all time" thing:

1 Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
2 Hunters & Collectors - Throw Your Arms Around Me
3 The The - Uncertain Smile
4 The Jam - That's Entertainment
5 New Order - Blue Monday
6 Dead Kennedys - Holiday In Cambodia
7 The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
8 Hunters & Collectors - Talking To A Stranger
9 Sugarcubes - Birthday
10 The Cure - A Forest

The version of Throw Your Arms Around Me that would've been in the 1989 one I much prefer to the re-released version which is a lot cleaner and slower, and almost all of the latest top 10 wasn't even made yet, but on the whole I prefer these songs a whole lot more.

Number 6 is a f**king good song! Wish that had been right up there this time, but considering the only airplay most punk gets is after 10 on a wednesday night these days, thanks to richard kingsmills insistence on playing only indie, aus hip hop and electro during the day, it didnt have a chance.

Favourite Queen song: March of the Black Queen.

Check it out if you hadn't. After years of Bohemion Rhapsody I find this song far superior.

I don't have too many complaints about the top ten other than it's predictibility (which I guess should be a good thing).

'March Of The Black Queen' is an awesome song. However 'Ogre Battle' would be my favourite off that album -Queen II ... possibly Queen's best album beginning-to-end (and Brian May's favourite Queen album).

I don't mean to get the thread sidetracked here. Sorry!
Those previous years' lists of the 100 hottest songs of all time are interesting to see. I'll admit a lot of the ones in the 1989 list I don't know by name. I'm sure I'd know them if I heard them though.
I'd be interested to see the full 100 lists for both years - just to see what was considered by JJJ as the hottest 100 of all time back then.

The Smiths - How Soon is Now?

I voted for that in my top 10

Along with Nirvana's "Smells Like", Joy Divisions "Love will", Stone Roses "Fools Gold", The Who's "My Generation", Sasha's "Xpander" & Bedrocks "For what you dream of" among others.
