What's more impressive is that Halligan played for Canterbury for 6 years in the 90's, and topped the points scorers list every year for them.

6 Years. Wow. That is less years than Terry Lamb won Dally M Five Eigth of the year. Must've been a fluke.

Are you seriously considering Lockyers CLUB record at 5/8th in the same universe as Terry Lamb's? The only people who get close are Kenny and maybe Lyons. Seriously. Give yourself an uppercut.

Oh......were we only comparing club records?

You have spent an enormous amount of time bleating on about Lockyer and that world cup.....

The uppercut is still all yours at the moment.

That's nice. Canterbury was known as a one-man team for a period in the 90's.

Yes, Daryl Halligan scored all their points.

That's impressive for a man playing for Norths.

 Thanks for playing.

No - you never read anything properly do you? Lamb I listed as all - time club five eigth. The others were mentioned for club and rep records. So when Bretto started talking about Lockyer's 10 solo matching club performances - I just dismissed them with Lamb's history.

You should learn to read posts properly nevertheless.

Are these the same fine judges or hailed Lockyer as a 5/8th with the greats?

Never bought into media hype. Never will. Clyde could play, no doubt. But so could the others listed. IMO its a lot closer than you think.
What does media hype have to do with it? We are talking about guys who played with and against him.

Lockyer is a great player, picked him because his support play was sublime, not to different to Lamb back in the day, with Johns at 7 I don't need a dominant 6, one that can get the ball in crucial situations and has an amazing left boot.

Clyde has won 2 Clive Churchill medals. Even if he was lucky to get them he still performed at his best, at the highest level, he definitely deserved the 1989 one, something like 30 hit ups and 35 tackles. Champion player, Jason Smith was crafty and tough but not at the same level. I mean you said yourself that the Bulldogs in the 90s were a one man team right?

No, I didn't say that. Others ascribed that to Canterbury. A bit like Newcastle fans make out Joey was their whole team for certain years.

Jason Smith was a mere baby at this time so you'd be better to discuss McGrady, especially 91 or Dymock in 93.

Who is others though? players? coaches? media? fans? I never thought the Dogs were a one man side. The strength of their side was the forward pack which allowed Baa to play his style of footy backing up on the inside. Guys like McCracken, Pay, Dymock and J Smith were guns and Even though some of them were yet to hit their peak they never reached the lofty heights of a Price, Clyde or Junior. Would even one Parramatta fan rate J Smith ahead of Price? Absolutely no way. It would be like Dragons fans thinking Ben Hornby is better than Billy Smith or thinking Beau Scott is better than Johnny Raper.

It all depends on what you want from the lock.

How much defence do you want. What style of defence? Hit ups or ball play?

So many variables. If you wanted ball play - J Smith was a gun.

And McCracken was a centre in Doggies time.

I have Freddy on the bench in case of that. Personally I would love to see Johns and C Smith at their peak in the 7 and 9 dominating the ruck and picking off the defense. The ruck would be slaughtered. Got Toovs off the bench if I want to rekindle the Johns/Toovey partnership that was so effective for Australia in the 90s. Who do you the opposition kick it to? Slater, Mullins or GI? I would love to watch my side roll through.

Bradley Clyde - 89 GF

Played 100 mins

31 runs for 235m (made harder due to the 5m rule back then)
34 Tackles
3 Offloads
2 Linebreaks

Not bad for a 19 year old.

Jason Smith should have been a one or two club player. I have no doubt that Smith at 5/8 for is in 01 means we win. Smith never made the test jumper his own, partly because of the judiciary.

I will pay him one respect. Arguably our best finals game of the modern era, against Norths at home in 98, was a brutal game with Smith absolutely majestic. Trouble was 2 weeks later we had our famous capituation with Smith playing a major role in that. I have no doubt that had we not folded in the last 11 minutes of that game, we would have beaten Brisbane in the grand final.

What ifs..........!
