Your "League Lockdown" Re-watch

Broncos vs eels 1996 today.
Sensational. Definitely worth a watch if you’re a broncos fan.
It’s the first win over the eels at anz for the broncos.
Peter Johnson is superb for the eels. So is Jason Smith ibm
Aaron raper has a very up and down game and this is a good reason for the hia rule.
Check out the game he has

My memory is that while the Eels were pretty ordinary in that era, for some reason they did well against the Broncos and had beaten them at the same ground in front of a full house. Was up there with the biggest upsets I can remember.

Thanks mate.

I get completely lost sometimes. Too many stadium name changes over the years.

All good. It hosted the ceremonies and athletics for the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Where Matilda the big kangaroo did a lap and winked at the crowd. Think the roo is still around, had seen it a number of times driving around Brissy, although that was many years ago now.

It’s the old QE2 stadium in Brisbane which was sponsored by ANZ for a time. Held about 60,000 from memory. Think it is still in existence but unsure, and can’t remember any major sport played there since the Broncos went back to the redeveloped Lang Park.
Yes it’s still in existence and has been well maintained. I saw Eminem there last year and the venue is still in good shape. There is a lot of local and state athletic competitions there.

The 2009 Prelim Parra vs Dogs before 75,000 fans (on Fox with a "live" call just yesterday). Parra came from behind to win only to be stopped by an over-the-cap Storm the following week. Fuifui Moimoi was a monster and Hayne unstoppable. It was a very good Dogs side they beat.

Every fan of every club dreams of having a run of form like Parramatta had in the latter part of 2009. From 14th position after 18 rounds, to being stopped only by a side outrageously cheating the salary cap for years. I'm no Parra fan but what this team did was special.

Was this a different ANZ to the current one?

Thanks merkin

Now I feel like an old merkin

Anyway I watched plenty of broncos games there. It has an impressive capacity but is a shithouse stadium to watch footy because of the angle of the seats.
Watched a game there once from the yellow cabs box and the view was still average

Watched Storm - Dragons from rd 1 2009 on Sat night. Fox had it has one of their classics matches.

I forgot how unique Inglis was in the #6 jersey. Sent Soward to Flinders St Station when he scored.

I remember Mark Geyer the next day saying the Dragons would never win a comp with Soward in the 6 after that. Not really a fair comment, David vs Goliath.

Inglis on Soward or Yow Yeh on Marshall which was better?

That was a great game. One side with a new coach and a new attitude trying to match it with one of the competition heavyweights. Lots of feeling (more so from the Saints side as usual).

I'd say the Inglis one on Soward. Soward looked like he'd bounced off a trampoline when Inglis fended him. Peak Inglis was amazing player to watch. Yow Yeh on Marshall was hilarious though.

Completely agree about Inglis. At his peak there has been nobody better imo

Was a great game even though we lost. If memory serves me correctly I think Big Dell had a brilliant game.

Came across this extremely rare find and gave it a watch just then. Pretty memorable and unique game. I imagine this would've been the most memorable SL game in 1997 by far.

At least the final of that tri series is a good watch. I read Laurie Daley's autobiography 3 years ago, there is a section where Daley talks about leading NSW in that Tri Series and how he couldn't get emotionally invested in it and how the Kiwis playing didn't feel like the same thing.

Those Super League jerseys are complete shit wonder what moron designed them.
