Finishing off a back line move is a skill and all but frankly Merritts record isn't that much better than Ferguson who plays a player in for Canberra..

plus there is obviously more up side with fergo. He's younger for starters and even when he reigns in his natural game a bit he's still able to function as a hard working winger where Merritt simply can't. If nsw is under the pump I'd rather Blake Ferguson coming in to take work off the forwards than Merritt.

I mean its not like Ferguson is just a hard working backline player. Its that he can do it if needed.

Have you even watched Blake Ferguson play. The circumstances of the game called on fergo to work as an extra prop. Outside of being able to do that he can also finish off a backline play, is strong in the air and can run over the top of his opposite number.

He's physically larger than Merritt, is stronger and provides more x factor. His tries to game ratio isn't that much worse than Merritts despite playing a position in for the raiders.

Ferguson can score a try 1m out from an overlap like Merritt but he can also score tries in loads of different ways.

Honestly this is a crazy argument to me because Ferguson is obviously the better player in any circumstance. He can work hard when its needed, he can score a long range try where he tip toes down the sideline and chip kicks the full back and he can Merritt style fall over the try line 1m out. He can adapt to the situation depending on what nsw need. Merritt can't.

Seriously, why is this even being discussed? David Williams would get given another chance at Origin level before Merrit would get his first (and I have no trouble admitting that Wolfman was abysmal when he played Origin).
