We won the game and he did exactly what his coach asked of him. Would Merritt have been able to make 100m plus playing the role that Daley gave Ferguson because that's the role Merritt would have been asked to play.

I'm sorry one of your favourite players won't get rep honours but he's physically not up for it.

He made more metres than any nsw player besides Gallen, Hayne or Lewis. That was what Daley clearly wanted from his wings. Merritt simply could not do that.

I understand you like Merritt but its over. Nsw intend on playing Queensland up the guts and want to use the wings as extra props. He's just too small.

Or you could, you know, carry an actual forward on the bench instead of a blank spot and let the wingers be wingers

We won game 1 and if Queensland are vulnerable its in the forwards. The plan is to obviously swarm Queensland in the forwards and give the spine and backline zero room to work.

Under that structure hit up 1 and 2 for nsw is important to get a roll on. Ferguson can roll up the sleeves and play as an extra prop, so can Morris. Merritt can't.

They're not f**king props, you stupid merkin. They're wingers. f**k me

Wingers tend to take the first couple of hit ups as forwards tire. Have you watched much modern rugby league.

These devotees of the Church of Daleyntology are just going to stare at that with the uncomprehending blankness of a cow.

Hayne makes a half break on the kick return who would you rather take the next hit up while the forwards get back Ferguson or Merritt. This is why Merritt won't play origin

How many sides even play wingers Merritts size anymore. He would honestly be feeling the pressure from physical players like Lee at the raiders and Ferguson would walk into a centre position at souths so this is all just nonsense.

Let's pick the front-rower who more resembles a winger in the future while we're at it.

Its a wonder big, slow, unathletic oafs like Webcke ever got a run --- they couldn't dash down the blindside if they had a pitbull on their ass.

A wonder a guy like Merritt can play at all, let alone become the star he is, when he can't even take a hit up.

Perhaps the biggest wonder of all is how Pete manages to master breathing.

I would love Merritt there in broken play. Speed and evasiveness is far more effective if you're talking about a half break up field, why would I want the winger to run right into traffic like a forward?

How many of your super wingers have Merritt's tries?

f**k knuckle.

I don't understand what case Merritt has to ever play origin. He just offers Queensland a weak point to target. I can also admit one of my own in Uate will be a liability in defence and shouldn't be playing origin until he improves. I'd like another prop on the bench but Daley has already told Reynolds he'll be picked for game 2. Keep this team together and they will continue to grow and develop. I don't want to see anything other than a back three of Hayne/Morris/Ferguson and Maloney/Pearce in the halves.

Sorry I meant tackle bust ie he gets a quick play the ball. Players like Merritt are a dying breed. I'm so so sorry for you but that's the march of pro sport progress. Edrick Lee has barely played a game of league in his life until very recently but because he is a big player is much more likely to play rep football. Fact.

Merritt should have been picked four or so years ago when he undebatably the best winger in the game. He is not quite as devastating as he used to be

The dying breed who has outscored all your giants for the better part of ten years

Pete, just die. You're too f**king dumb to deserve existence.

Please tell me how Merritt would have bettered the NSW performance in that particular game. Or even how Ferguson worsened the NSW performance? That's the only basis on which you can drop a player here. Forgot about stupid NRL tries scored where half of them are probably strolling over from 5 metres out.

Maybe so, but Merritt still outplays anyone you can name at club level, and his ability has nothing to do with his speed or strength - his talent is his ability to be around the ball and read the play and take advantage of it. It's something similar to what Ben Barba and Matt Bowen have. His ability to find tries from nowhere is freakish.

If there was a loose carry in Origin (and there were a few this week), Merritt would probably scoop up the ball and find a try
