Your top 5 overrated players of all time?

Langer could barely kick a ball 20 metres

His defence consisting mainly of wrapping his legs around players and tripping them

He had no long passing game of note

He was nifty little player who's small stature gave him an advantage in speed and agility over a short distance when he ran the ball. That was his main strength - he was such a little midget that it was difficult to tackle him

Not a patch on Stuart as a halfback though, to me it's laughable to even put him in the same bracket

Sorry just re-checking the Stuartless and Langerful list again to make sure I haven't missed any of the long line of forgotten, Great Depression/pre-war, amateur-era halfbacks with no surviving footage managing to shut Stuart out of said list.

@Captain Apollo 4 mate, 4. Back to back twice.

Certainly Langer is in a vastly different league than the cod-ordinary Stuart. Langer is rightly mentioned in all-time best-of lists decades after his retirement. Stuart's exploits are summed up by an occasional mention of his surname after all the other proper halfbacks of the modern era are analysed and discussed ("Oh and don't forget Stuart. He was a good 'un too!" Discussion closes uncomfortably).

Langer provided the attacking spark for some of the greatest ever club, state and national teams ever assembled, where Stuart merely passed the ball to the talented players and occasionally closed his slitty eyes and kicked the ball as far as he could and hoped for the best. (That's when Mal wasn't the preferred field-position kicker, which he usually was.)

Stuart's career petered out as soon as he wasn't surrounded by all-time greats, slinking away to Canterbury to be promptly forgotten by history, only to be resurrected as one of the most derided coaches of the modern era. Langer has fashioned himself into the greatest water-carrier the game has ever seen, zipping around the field with style and panache and STILL aggravating opposition fans more than any other trainer in history apart from maybe Toovey.

Wally Lewis finished at the GC- I suppose he was a nobody too?

Wasn't Langer dropped twice during Ashes series, only for Stuart to come in and save the day in games 2 and 3 in both the 90 & 94 series, while also beating Langer 4-1 in direct origins played against each other?

He's trolling us?

Think it's clear he's the one that's been trolled m8.

By trolling I mean he's purposely writing bullshit to provoke a response. So if you think you're trolling him that would mean you think Alfie is clearly better than Sticky and you are writing nonsense to get him to reply?

Dunno mate. Dunno.

All I know is that post-playing career Sticky has become one of the greatest coaches in the game and possibly of all-time; a widely respected figure of great of influence who managed to get the once great but spluttering Green Machine firing again..... and Langer is still a simpleton who's post-playing claim to fame is hanging around on the field for too long like a fly to do the simple job of running water and dancing in his underwear at the Normanby Hotel.

The 94 Raiders was the best club side I’ve ever seen. Stuart was the best halfback I’ve seen, passing and kicking game was off the charts. It helps that he played in a golden era for the Raiders, but without him they were shot ducks.

Langer was great for different reasons. He was an absolute pest with ball-in-hand and played well above his weight in defence.

I rate them both above all others including Andrew Johns, and neither deserve any mention in this thread for mine.

Ricky Stuart as one of the best coaches of all time. That will do me....

I'm obviously biased but I think Stuart at his peak was probably better 90-94. Langer has longevity though and was part of 2 very dominant Broncos era's. Injuries killed Stuart's career post 1995 though.

Suggesting either of them are overrated is silly though. Cronk won 4 premierships (6 if you include the stripped ones). But I still think Stuart and Langer were better and more dominant players than Cronk.

Ask any Roosters, Sharks or Eels fan what they think of Ricky Stuart.

I think he's a good coach. We haven't win the premiership in 27 years. Artie couldn't coach us to a premiership. Bozo couldn't. Gould couldn't. Murray got us to a grand final but couldn't win the title. then Sticky comes along and wins us the premiership in his first season. So yeah, as a Roosters fan I will always defend him
