Your top 5 overrated players of all time?

I think he is overrated for that very reason that the media gush over him. He was anointed with the moniker 'King' after, what, 50 games mostly on the wing?

He played a handful of games on the wing, and was then moved to 5/8.

And the "King" moniker has been overblown - the full moniker is "the King Of Parramatta"; it's not a comparison to Wally Lewis, but rather that Parramatta has a new icon in town.

I think it’s the total opposite

You’ve pretty much said it in your third paragraph. Fans love the players who don’t have the natural talents of others but put in every week or ‘bleed for the club’

Ask a Saints fan what they think of Jason Nightingale, Raiders fan of Alan Tounge, Roosters of Mitch Aubusson etc

Honestly I put Gutherson in the category of guys like that

I can see both views but I agree with yours.

I think for regarding forwards, a lot of what great forwards do doesn’t stand out like backs do, and so the fans of the club may have better insight.

But “greats” are apparent to those who don’t have an emotional attachment to the club they play for. Or at least that’s my view.

I can't fathom how anyone could ever call Gutherson over-rated - I mean, the media harp on, and on, about him, but nobody who is being serious would have him ahead of Tedesco, Trbojevic, RTS, etc.

He is a supremely fit, very skilful fullback, who gives 100%, and never stops - but he isn’t a superstar player.

I put my hand up on this one, not to be a smartarse though. I posted a little while back here. Can’t remember if it was you or Hineyrulz I was in convo about it.

And basically because of what you said. The commentary can be off the charts. Indeed, he’s full of effort, team-man, can do some great things but he isn’t a superstar as you’ve said.

I actually hate the term “over-rated” as it lends itself to bagging players, “he’s shit” and all that simpleton talk, which I hate to do and am not doing here. More that - does a player consistently live up to the level that many (popular opinion) consider him to be at, or the money they are on.

Or another way to test it - would I be happy if that player was in my club.

I’d put Gutherson in the middle tier of current fullbacks in the NRL. Thats not a bad thing at all. Just where I see him, my opinion. Would I be happy if he was a Dragon? Yes.

Gutho is good. I used to think the nicname was ironic but he has genuinely come up into the top bracket of FB's now, though genuine improvement. He's a great fit for Parra's style. I'm not sure he'd go to another club and turn their fortunes around but then again, he just might.

He reminds me a bit of Moloney- just always coming at you with another type of play, fearlessly. Whether he's been bashed or made 3 stinkers to put his team behind he absolutely will back himself to make the winning play next time. Never goes away, attacks from all positions. Might lack the physical gifts of a few FB's but he's actually mentally tough.

I agree.

I believe he makes up for the lack of physical gifts his counterparts offer (for example, Tedesco's freakish tackle-breaking ability, or Trbojevic's speed), by being supremely fit, mentally tough, and bringing a fair bit of skill to the table.

He is also cool under pressure, and a smart footy player - his play in Golden Point against the Raiders, to stick his foot on the goal line, after a Raider field goal attempt, to get us a 7 tackle set...it was very smart play.

… and Kalyn Ponga continues to make his mark as one of the all-time greats in the overrated thread after taking the field against Cronulla and managing to avoid playing any of the game.

Genius.

This Joseph Suaalii character must surely already be in the top 10, right?

What kind of moron signs a 16 year old to $700K, let alone the $1 million the ARU is willing to flush down the toilet on him. Souths being saved by the ARU's own incompetence there.
Found this thread and had a read through some of the history.

This is one of my all-time LU comments….

Sam Burgees for me. Solid player but was never exposed for poor ball control due to constant favourable decisions, the free penalties were very much a part of what he brought to the team. Would have been Manu/SKD/Sandow tier without the advantages given to him.

Kalynn Ponga. Media reports he's on about $1 million a seasdon and that the Dophins are willing to pay him $1.3 million per season. If that is close to accurate, then how the hell does he deserve that kind of money when realistically he has done SFA to help anyside he has played with in first grade to compete for a Premiership?

Sam Burgess had one elite season in the NRL, otherwise he was wildly inconsistent. However constantly being in the media had him much higher rated then he should have been. Not in the top 5 forwards of the last 10 years, maybe Around 8-10th

Ponga should be worth $1m+ on talent alone, he just doesn’t care. Footy seems like his 5th priority. Knights should cut him loose and sign a guy like Drinkwater on a third of that money.
