Like Lomax, Aitken if off contract at the end of next season too, but I can not recall hearing any clubs interested in signing him up, while the likes of Canberra, Newcastle and Wests have all been mentioned as being interested or talking to Lomax. Why aren't clubs lining up to sign your favourite player? There are probably more who are interested in signing Lomax too. I think it is off to the ESL for you Euan.

Why did not Millward off-load Aitken to ESL years ago?

Zac Lomax excited for Shane Flanagan's arrival at the Dragons

Eager: Zac Lomax has welcomed Shane Flanagan. Picture: Adam McLean.

Promising St George Illawarra back Zac Lomax is confident the arrival of Shane Flanagan will have a positive effect on the club.

The Dragons officially announced on Wednesday the former Sharks coach will join the club as an assistant for Paul McGregor.

With the side hoping to rebound from a disappointing season, Lomax said the signing will only help the Dragons achieve more success on the field.

"A lot of confidence is going to be brought to the club from him coming here," Lomax said.

"I can tell we're definitely heading in the right direction. Everyone's turned up to the pre-season with the right attitude, everyone wants to get better.

"We know we need to improve, but everyone's really confident we're going to be able to do that, no one's taking a backwards step.

"There's been a lot of changes at the club but everyone's bought into it. There's really exciting times ahead."

NRL: Dragons' Zac Lomax to make call on playing future

By AAP

They've already promised him first crack at the crucial fullback spot next year, but St George Illawarra might soon find out if Zac Lomax is the long-term answer.

Having entered the final year of his Dragons contract, Lomax is weighing up his NRL future after meeting a number of rival clubs in recent weeks.

The 20-year-old is believed to have already toured Newcastle's facilities and has also been linked heavily with a possible move to Canberra.

But the Wests Tigers have emerged as a genuine suitor, with the merger-club having the added carrot of being able to offer Lomax the No.1 jumper.

It is understood Lomax might make a decision as soon as next week.

"We have spoken to some other clubs and it's been good to understand how other clubs roll, (see) some of the facilities," Lomax told AAP.

"But I'm letting my manager do his work. There's a process in place.

"At the moment, I'm worrying about my teammates right now and being the best teammate I can and competing the best that I can at every training session."

In a sign of how desperate the Dragons are to keep Lomax, coach Paul McGregor has guaranteed the promising talent first shot at fullback in 2020.

It is a position the Temora product has wanted since making his debut two years ago in the centres, where he has played most of his 17 games so far.

"It's good that (McGregor has) got confidence in me. Hopefully, the playing group's got confidence in me as well," Lomax said.

"I'll make sure that I try and get that from them by just showing them that I can work hard and put in the effort on the training paddock so I get that respect."

Lomax has set himself the task of emulating the breakout seasons of fellow youngsters Ryan Papenhuyzen and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

Lomax was Papenhuyzen's teammate in the Junior Kangaroos' win over France.

"What Paps does really well is that he works off the ball, probably more than a lot of fullbacks in the game. His workrate's through the roof," Lomax said.

"I think if you can bring a good workrate to the team and you bring effort and you compete on each play, I think that can go a long way as a fullback.

"You look at someone like Nicoll-Klokstad, he's fresh to the NRL but you look at what he brought to his team week in, week out. He competed on everything.

"And he was probably one of the game's best this year. You look at someone like that, and it's something I'm trying to bring to my game, competing consistently."

I am questioning where Stuart would plan to play Lomax, if they signed him. They currently have Croker and Scott as there centres. CNK is their current fullback and Cotric is a winger who I think wants to play centre. Maybe Stuart would be planning to play Lomax centre and tap Croker on the shoulder next year?

I think Wests are the biggest danger. They have the money they were offering Mitchell, to spend on a fullback and Lomax wants to play fullback. He has already met with Maguire a while back. He also may want to get away from McGregor. I really hope we keep Lomax.

Zac Lomax is not a Mitchell or a Xerri.

As the calm one says ‘stay calm everyone’ if Zac Lomax goes elsewhere then I wish him well and maybe one of these genuinely fast and powerful young fullbacks coming through ( is it Ramsey?) may take his chance within a year or two.

SGI are always pointing to young players that will be available in a year or two. The problem is that we should be competing each and every year for a competition win. Much of this could have been avoiced if Millward followed the natural rule of replacing 'like with like or better'. Instead we had the stupid idea of having 3 halves on our books in 2019. And a back 5 of very average or inexperienced players.

Moving forward to 2020, we let Leilua go and recruit Merin. It should have always been, keep Leilua and replace De Belin if he becomes unavailable with Merin. Add to this the possibility that Graham might retire on medical grounds prior to the start or very early in season 2020. And we still have not extended Frizell.

It is a mess, a Millward Mess.

Perhaps his brother Hayden will be our Ace up the sleeve keeping him here, speaking of which who has seen him play do you rate him? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
