McGain to fly home

October 03, 2008

BRYCE McGain's tour of India is over, with the Victorian wrist spinner to fly home from the subcontinent this weekend.

Having arrived as the Australian Test team's mooted frontline spinner for the four-match series against India, McGain's chances unravelled over the weekend when he attempted to bowl at near match pace for the first time since suffering a shoulder strain while playing here for Australia A.

Complaining of pain during and after bowling, he was told by team physio Alex Kountouris that he had re-aggravated the strain and would need several weeks to recover, officially ruling him out of the first Test and probably the series.

From that moment it seemed only a matter of time before McGain would be sent home to recover and ensure he was fit to be considered for the home Tests against New Zealand and South Africa.

Cricket Australia are yet to nominate a replacement, but NSW left-arm chinaman bowler Beau Casson, who made his Test debut in the Caribbean earlier this year, seems the only legitimate candidate.

A decision is expected to follow the arrival of Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch in Hyderabad on Friday night.

IF they dont send another spinner over they are kidding themselves as it means Krejza is the lone spin option and hat if he doesnt perform it just means we have to go for a lone pace attack.

Id send Hauritz over, ahead of Casson.

roy, clarke and katich could handle the spin bowling, combined, they wont do any worse than whoever gets the gig fulltime imho

lol. i was watching remember the titans the other day, and figured out where you got sunshine from ><

this is going to be a tough tour, and i dont think throwing a young player who isn't ready into an indian test is the solution. they will get destroyed. i think we'd be better to play on our strengths and play the extra quick man. and i think it should be bracken. i think with his cuts and ability to swing it he could use the dustbowl pitches to his advantage

we need a squad of spinners, at least 2 specialists and a couple of part time tweakers, but that team MUST contain a wrist spinner otherwise we are kidding ourselves because we'll have no variation

a finger spinner like Krezja and a few part timers will cost us the series, imo

name me a current overseas finger spinner who has does real well in India in recent years? Murali? lol

our pacemen and batsman did the job there in the past, and it must be that way again if we want to retain the trophy. Lets play to OUR stengths, not to theirs

by not having a wrist spinner, we are playing to their strengths, finger spinner are a dime a dozen

Murali is ....well.......unique in his action, he is no regular finger spinner, no one else can be "compared" to him

sorry typo

name me a current wrist spinner who has done well over there in recent times?

i can see the variation side of things, but im not sure thats the plan we should have on this tour, especially with our spin options, for a couple of tests anyway

Problem is we don't have any good leggies. Bailey and Doran have lost form and I can't think of any leggies after them. White although hes classed as one hes more a top spinner. Steven Smith is the other but geez would be brave by the selectors to pick him although I'm crazy enough to go with him.

True which is why I would not be against flying Tait over rather than a spinner. Our spinners are rubbish- all of them so why play mediocre spinners for the sake of it!

As for a spinner, what about Aaron Heal- at least he has got bags of wickets before and he would be something different for India to face. My problem is I am not sure he is an attacking bowler
