Yes fully roofed, no not retractable. Great looking stadium. 25k capacity with drop in further 5k seats if needed. Is it fully roofed ?
if it is is the roof retractable
Most of nz lives on the north islandSeparate from the warriors.
Most of nz lives on the north island
South Island has a fairly small population.
an nrl team solely based in the South Island would struggle imo
if you have to pick one then Wellington and places around it
Hamilton, Waikato, build the derby, then expand to Wellington and Christchurch there afterSeeing lots of people in favour of the NRL admitting a second NZ team. But there seems to be a shortage of detail on any official bids. Is there genuine interest and more specifically where would they play and what would they be called?
Christchurch in the new Te Kaha Stadium is one option if so, would they be called Christchurch? Canterbury? Southern or South Island?
Would Wellington be a good place for an NRL team? Auckland has nearly 2 million people in the city which is more than enough for a second NRL team, how about that?
According to data the current population of Christchurch is just over 400k and the greater Christchurch area has a projected population of just over 600k by 2030.Most of the North Island lives in & around Auckland. South Island has about 1.1m people, Canterbury region around 650k of that. Wellington has slightly less in the immediate vicinity but more within easy travelling distance from memory. @flippikat would be able to give a better summation I’m sure.
If it was the number 1 sport yes, as a number 2 sport? Not so sure.According to data the current population of Christchurch is just over 400k and the greater Christchurch area has a projected population of just over 600k by 2030.
this is more than enough to sustain a NRL team imo.
I think the interest is already there and a lot would depend on results but I think to start off with a support base of around 10-12k would be a success. If it was the number 1 sport yes, as a number 2 sport? Not so sure.
Invercargill is the arsehole of the universe so they’ll probably just forfeit to save going thereSince V'Landy wants it in the south then Invercargill is clearly the front runner - they'll win every home game as Oz teams wont be able to handle the conditions.

there’s very little in it.
Wellington functional urban area is 414K, plus 46K next door in the Kapiti Coast (half an hour up the new motorway)
Christchurch functional urban area is 470K.
Wellington would start to pull ahead once you start talking about places within a couple of hours drive, but within 100km or so it’s pretty equal.
Won’t that be confusing with the west coast pirates having already been admitted to the nrl a few years earlier?South Pacific Pirates
What ever happened to that bid ?Won’t that be confusing with the west coast pirates having already been admitted to the nrl a few years earlier?
Thanks, sounds like population won’t be a deciding factor then. Waikato looks like similar numbers too.
Cantabrians are probably the most parochial people in NZ- if it was based primarily in Christchurch you'd probably just brand it as a Christchurch or Canterbury team.Regarding Christchurch do you think a “South Island” branded team could work in a similar manner to North Queensland? Maybe playing a couple games a year in Dunedin and a trial in Nelson. Or would the rest of the South Island just see it as a Canterbury team however you painted it?
Yeah, that's a big risk for Christchurch-based side, could easily be just a Christchurch-supported side.. plus the Crusaders are a huge presence there, so a tough task carving a niche for an NRL team there.Waikato itself very similar- 515K in the region and the vast bulk of those within an hour of Hamilton. Plus another 350K in the adjoining Bay of Plenty region a little over an hour away.

Problem is the other prime candidate - my city Wellington - just doesn't have a great record of sporting success or active fan engagement. Dunno whether we're too metropolitan/arty, or if it's the "lovable loser" experience that makes us less emotionally invested in our teams or what it is.
