I'm concerned that if he doesn't sign now we will fall into a flat heap like we did when Bellamy was odds on favourite to sign. The good work of the past 6 weeks may be in vain with the let down the whole club feels if the deal isn't done...

I just don't want this to become a media circus a massive distraction the club especially the players don't need.

If he comes and makes the decision early then thats great but if it drags on for weeks then it may become a problem.

Bennett hasn't even spoken to the club and people are talking about greatness and the like how funny.

The team is going in a better direction is it the right one I don't know for sure but this whole Bennett will bring back greatness is such a stretch its ridiculous.

The team now is so different from the one he inherited 4 years ago its alot younger with alot less experience and alot of fine tuning to do if he does decide to sign on again.

The players have responded to Mary at least thats a plus they seem to have a better understanding of what they are trying to do and don't look as lost as they previously did under Price.

Does that warrant Mary getting a new deal not for me to say I'm just thankful the team is trying to right the ship but if it becomes the Bennett will he won't he circus followed by his butt boy Boyd I say not thanks.

coast neither you nor I know what is happening behind the scenes with managers etc.
Bennett has an enviable record of multiple Premierships. Plenty argue he is the best coach of all time.
He has history with us and brought success to us after a long and painful wait.
It's only natural that people will be excited. It would be foolish to pass on the opportunity if it came again.
Mary is young. Would gain plenty learning under Bennett and his time will come if he has what it takes.

You both have valid points as we don't have a crystal ball. Bennett's poor results as admitted by the man himself at Newcastle does put some doubt there but I do think we have as good as roster as 2008, won't take much to turn us into contenders and Mary should be commended for his results so far. What else can you say?

You seemed to have been supporting Mary over WB the last couple of days...

Not at all, my preference would be Bennett but I'd probably be happier with Belamy or Hasler. The only way I would want Mary is if we didnt secure Bennett and as I've stated maybe 20 times it would be on a 1yr deal for the reasons I've already outlined. If he had us leading the comp after round 12 next year I'd offer him a long term deal in the interest of stability of the club but that is not my motivation however you can't argue with success.

That was definitely deflating but Mary will handle it better than Price and while we're winning we will cope with just about anything

the more i think maybe we should ignore the security blanket effect bennett is having on the club and stick with a young coach like mary.dont get me wrong the romantic notion of bennett returning and reviving our fortunes does appeal to me,but he will probably bring a host of players with him that are at or nearing the end of their careers at the expense of up and coming talent, and i just get the feeling that his time is now mentality of winning premierships failed miserably at newcastle because its a flawed way of doing things in the current game.coaches like hasler cleary et al are going about it by coming in with 3-5 year plans that are proven methods in the short to medium term and are'nt devastating on the club in the long term and i think if bennett is to come then it should be a condition mary is the successor to take over in the long term if all parties aggree and if not we should bite our lips and pass on bennett give mary the tools to develop the list for the long term that way from a comercial point of view would be the best thing for the club going forward!he has the support of the players the results so far on the field and at the moment what more can you ask for?

Yea if we do take Bennett which Im ok about but my only concern is do we self destruct when he goes again like we did or do we sign a younger coach that will be around for a while ?......

I prefer Wayne to come back..then for Mary to take over.

Wayne was caught up in the whole Tinkler belief, when it all came crushing down, I think Wayne was crushed himself..believing the knights were going to be the Broncos of the 90s, adding to the other serious problems, it got the better of the master coach, he is human you know.

Post #32 in the 'Sterlo/ Bennett' thread.

I posted a suggestion on a succession plan that includes McGregor and Bennett.

Thats a sound post.

Its a commercial gamble either way.

We are also ( i think ) , reliving the Price era too much. IE, just cause he failed, doesnt mean Mary will.

Its cuts both ways.

Where the club is at now, i feel Wayne is best placed to steady the ship, re-build confidence in sponsors, players and fans. Mary would be well served to work closely with Wayne, as he to date has shown promise in the area of coaching.

Sometimes, one needs to take a step back in order to take two forward.

Disagree that you're as good as your last gig. Wayne is the best in the business at getting the best out of players, bar none. His support staff, particularly Hickman, are the best in the business.

I dont think it will be anything like last time he was here, where we had a mature squad who had missed by that much for years. Weve got a young squad saturated in both talent and potential..we've got good juniors who will be ready in a few years, and weve got some younger up-and-coming coaches who have the technical knowledge of the game and leadership skills to become great coaches in time (Young Jnr, Hornbag and Mary). He may bring in a couple of older players for experience and leadership, but unless he hets rid of 80% of the team, we will be fine in the aftermath.

FROM JB...

Good points.
I'm just thinking out loud here....

Why not include McGregor as an assistant to Emperor Bennett but make the focus of McGregor's JOB role to be responsible for the development of players? Something along the lines of....' you need to develop an up and coming squad to be 1st grade ready to challenge for the premiership in 3-4 years time. Your squad must consist of (e.g.)8 x U20 players and 6 x current first grade players and 3 from Cutters that you would/could draft in to 1st grade'.
This way he is given an INCENTIVE for the head coaching role but is actively developing and is responsible for players, for that time when he steps up to the plate (if). This ensures we have a ready made stable of players coming through, our juniors are targeted and coached correctly, given exposure to Bennett and his ethos and there can be no excuses for dropping the ball in terms of on-going success.
This also allows Emperor Bennett the CHANCE at his short term goals of winning a premiership but does not stop us from continuing to produce the goods or neglect our future development.

Apparently the Dragons have tabled a $3m, three year contract to Bennett; heard on the Footy show ch 9 today.

In addition it seems Boyd will be following Bennett to the Dragons as the Dogs have set their sights on Kurtley Beale.

BULLDOGS coach Des Hasler has targeted Wallaby Kurtley Beale as the ideal replacement for former Dally M Medal winner Ben Barba at Canterbury next season.

St George Illawarra reunion with Wayne Bennett reunion could prove costly with head office

Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...head-office-20140712-zt5b7.html#ixzz37JephJPm

I believe Bennett's salary will be financed under a 3rd party sponsorship program and not out of any funds advanced to the Dragons.

The NRL has only provided an advance to the Dragons not an increase to their normal grant.

The potential financial benefits of having Bennett - and players he brings with him - on board would far outway the benefits of an NRL advance.

Really, I think it sour grapes by the NRL who tried to keep Bennett a Newcastle.

I hope the Dragons take care to up-grade the Taj over the next three years in order to turn around the Clubs fortunes.
