Movies That Didn't Make Any Sense

Anything David Lynch as already stated. He does it on purpose though.

Picnic at Hanging Rock??? Oh, it makes perfect sense if you don't interpet it too literally.

Force Majeure was another that appears to make little sense on first viewing, but with a little thought also makes a lot of sense.

Inland Empire takes the cake as far as David Lynch is concerned.

Still don't have the faintest idea what happened in 3 hours.

Something about his films do pull you in though, I'm quite a fan.

It does. What part didn't you get?

Like most Nolan movies they're not as complex as they first appear.

All right here goes lol ......

All the other Nolan movies made perfect sense to me (although the last 20 mins of Interstellar was pretty out there). If you re-watch say Memento and The Prestige, all the clues are there and the conclusion is logical.

The problem I have with Inception is the character of Cobb and his motivations. So he wants to see his kids again and Saito with one magic phone call can make that happen instantly even though he is accused of murder. Far fetched, but fine I'll buy that for a second.

But here's the theory which keeps bugging me, what if inception is being performed on Cobb himself? Especially when he has the major revelation with Mal four levels down, when he finally accepts that she is gone and what his mind can piece together about her is not good enough. Perhaps this is all he was looking for, absolving the guilt that she suicided before returning to his kids. That could be the idea that they're trying to sell deep into his subconsciousness.

There are bits of dialogue that hint towards that, Michael Caine saying "what are you doing here", "come back to reality", but this one especially "No creeping doubts? Not feeling persecuted, Dom? Chased around the globe by anonymous corporations and police forces, the way the projections persecute the dreamer? Admit it: you don't believe in one reality anymore. So choose. Choose to be here. Choose me."

Ellen Paige's character seems to be leading Cobb throughout the movie towards this, why would she bother with him so much if Fischer was the target? Maybe the only bit of 'reality' is when he wakes up in the plane in the end, and the rest was the crew in his mind.

I can't really tell whether there is any substance to that, and the movie doesn't really commit either way. It gives a lot of hints towards many possibilities and then leaves it hanging and contradicts various theories.

That's what annoys me.

I wouldn't call that a plot hole.

More of a subtle hint at an ambiguous sub plot.

Those lines can be taken less literally and then they have little meaning.

Well they wouldn't throw lines like that in there for no reason given how carefully Nolan's other movies were scripted. Which is why Inception bothers me because there are deliberate loose ends like these.

It's not about throwaway lines, it's about making the viewer consider the possibility that Cobb isn't in reality and potentially can't distinguish between one or the other very well. I don't see how that's a plot hole... even the end of the movie maintains that ambiguity - but the key to it is that to Cobb, it doesn't matter whether it's real or not anymore. His character has found his catharsis, forgiven himself for his wifes death and is ready now to see his kids. He doesn't care whether it's real or not by the end of the movie, he just wants to see his kids.

I'm not really seeing a loose end in any of that?

I may be in the minority but after watching The Matrix I just stared at a wall trying to understand wtf I just watched. Have never attempted to watch it again. Should I?

While it was confusing, everything ties up perfectly in the end with a logical explanation.
Inception doesn't do this, which pissed me off no end.

Irrespective of what one thinks of Inception that was kind of the point of the movie.

If Inception was deliberately left loose to make a point and you guys were happy with that, then that's fine. I personally however found it infuriating.

No right or wrong here, just different interpretations.
