Rumoured and Confirmed signings - Part 4

Was it 8 or 9 juniors in the 2003. The club's biggest strengths is the junior development program and pathways. (ehanced with structures put in by Gould)

It's the envy of many others within the NRL.

Around 50% is fine, but Gus has this wild idea of 80% debuting with the club. I just don’t think that number is possible if you want to win premierships.

The problem is the more juniors in the team the more guesswork is involved. It’s hard to know if a youngster, no matter how talented, will truly kick on. But when you buy a current first grader you’re typically getting a very known quantity.

So juniors are great, but we shouldn’t go overboard on them.

In reality though, let’s face reality. Penrith is not and has never been one of the glamour clubs. We have never been a club that is challenging for the top 4 every season. Our location is probably the most undesirable of any of the Sydney clubs for players to move to. And not even Gould with his status and reputation in the game could attract marque signings, and his biggest external signings he had to pay way overs for.

So I don’t see the last 18 months having made a difference in our ability to attract big name signings.
The location wasn't an issue in the late 80's, leading up to the first premiership in 91. Hard heads like Kelly, Gerard and Mortimer didn't mind the trek out along the Great Western Highway. Their influence brought along the great juniors in the club at the time, there are no hard heads in this current team.

Exactly.
Late 80' brought in Kelly, Mortimer and Gerard, as I had mentioned. ( all internationals)
The 2003 team had Campbell ( dally M winner) Girdler, Lang, Priddis, Sattler, Wesser. Three quarters of the spine not being local juniors.

Who out of them were stars before we signed them?

Presto did win Daly M in 2001 but was in reserve grade when we signed him

Different game back then players had work commitments that limited where they could go

I'm debunking your theory over your last few posts, maybe you might like to read back, you are basically saying the juniors are the light at the end of the tunnel. The 2 premierships weren't won on juniors alone, some astute buying "bought" the premierships. The years leading up to the 2003 premiership, Penrith bought up and coming stars in their relevant positions.

Any team that wins here will have more players that debuted here over players that were signed as First graders. Unless the RL landscape changes massively the back bone of any success this club has will be its juniors.

No. I said elite players don't change clubs. So therefore if we want elite players they need to be developed... Not that we shouldn't sign players at all

Exactly. What we can do is get guys like Api in. Hardly elite but a very good player to fill in what we lack

I agree with there being more juniors than imports, impossible to run it otherwise. When was the last signing Penrith made that was a huge or even successful addition to the team or results?..Maybe Maloney in 2018, but its pointless mentioning him because he has been death ridden by a lot of the posters on here, mainly because he got in poor Nathans way. Cleary is a quality player no doubt, S.O.O half and maybe an Australian player one day, he shouldn't be playing second fiddle to anyone, he should as being the halfback led the team and put Maloney in his place. maybe we would have seen more from Maloney and he wouldn't have been stuffed after every game.

Yeah we haven’t stopped trying to sign players and nor should we at all but we just aren’t a club that can go out and buy a bunch of rep quality players without paying overs for them all.

Atm we need experience that will need to get bought. Guys like Josh Morris won't make us win the comp but it will help guys like Naden/Crichton etc develop so we do

We cant afford to buy anyone near rep quality, we paid BIG dollars to junior reps who all of a sudden wanted to jump ship, and Penrith are lumped with paying the freight. There needs to be a massive cleanout of the club, keep the general duty workers and chop the rest. A fish always rots from the head.

He was only in reserve grade because Chris Anderson bought Brett Kimmorley over in 2002.
Preston didn't suit Anderson's style and they fell out. He would have been a starter anywhere else.

Luke Priddis was the NSW hooker when we signed him

But you don’t need to sign just stars. There’s good quality first graders out there that are going to be better than some of our juniors.

Take the signing of Scott Sattler or Joe Gulavao

Hardly any clubs can attract lots of rep quality players, it’s better to look at the mid tier bargains.

Gus’ 80% goal I believe put the blinkers on, he signed up local talent to long term deals that restricted our ability to go to the market.
