A game a week in every major market, in the very distant future this has got to surely be the goal

You didn't answer my question though, how does the NRL push passed 18/20 teams? or do you think once we get to that that's it, done forever
Major rugby league markets are qld nsw act and nz

Ever heard of something called growth? or ambition
I know the latter is hard to come by among you Sydney folk, must be why so many of the clubs from there have remained bottom-dwelling basket cases for so long
Killing off six Sydney teams to put teams in places nobody wants extra teams isn’t growth

what are you on about Sydney clubs have hundred and hundreds of millions in property assets

Nobody?

We know at the very least Perth Red wants a team in Perth - there's 1, I'm sure there's a couple (thousand) more

FFS for people who are apparently supporters of our game so many of you really doubt its ability to captivate new audiences, selling something to someone who is already buying it isn't any great achievement and can hardly be called expansion, expansion is growing the game to new audiences

in the very distant future, this is a thread about the immediate next team,

for 2 you've got to get to 1 first (which will probably take 50 years lol)

stop picking and choosing shit out of context

Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis has revealed rival clubs were "shocked" by his suggestion the NRL should consider expanding to 20 teams.

Politis was behind the push at a recent Annual General Meeting of clubs, where expansion was one of the topics discussed.

ARLC chairman Peter V'landys has publicly flagged the possibility of an 18th team as soon as 2025, with an increase to 20 by 2032.

Speaking on 2GB's Wide World of Sports radio, Politis says the code has no option but to add more teams.

"We have to," he argued.

"For the first time in the history of the game, the clubs, thanks to Peter V'landys and Andrew Abdo, the grants have increased to a level where just about every club is making a profit.

"That was a great achievement by the current administrators. To grow we need more and more revenue.

"To get more revenue from the media networks we've got to give them more product, it's pretty simple."

Politis, arguably the most powerful club chairman in the NRL, said his proposal to increase the number of teams took rival bosses by surprise.
"I suggested at an AGM a couple of weeks ago that maybe we should consider 20 teams. I think everybody was a bit shocked," he said.

"We've got to grow, if we're going to be a national sport we've got to be in every state.

"I'm not saying do it now, maybe it will take 5-10 years or more. We've got to work towards it and we've got to talk about it to make it happen.

"That's how you grow any business, you've got to go forwards, not backwards."

Writing in his weekly column for Wide World of Sports, NRL great Paul Gallen conceded that while expansion is inevitable, admitting an 18th team in 2025 was "a stretch".

"If that's going to happen we need to know who it's going to be within the next couple of months, because they're going to need time to put everything in place," Gallen wrote.

"Remember, players can start negotiating for 2025 from November 1 this year. The Dolphins had a similar timeframe and never came up with a marquee signing, and that was with the attraction of Wayne Bennett."

Gallen said that there was "no doubt" the renewed interest in expansion was driven by the Dolphins unexpected 2-0 start to their first season in the competition.

"I can accept 18, but to get to 20 by 2032 you're looking at a new team every 3-4 years, and I think that's a bridge too far," he wrote.

it is if that gives room to actually expand the games footprint, eventually we will get to a point where if we want to continue growing its either that or conferences

but how about you keep discussions within their threads, this ones about the 18th team in the more immediate future

It isn't expansion if you cut teams along the way

We are not getting two sides in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne and it wouldn’t make much sense in even the medium term.

We could and definitely should aim for one in each of those places and then very likely would work now, considering how big the grants are.

I think we go other places 1st and depending on Player depth if 22 and 24 teams become an option then Adelaide

But AFL Red said those grants to clubs are a bad thing.

Confused if I should believe a highly successful businessman/club chairman or some Pelican in Perth.
Well the clubs haven't done anything special to start making profits, they just got given bigger handouts to cover loses

either way its a good thing though, and removes even more doubt around a Perth teams viablitly

Eh? I said giving clubs more money to cover up their deficiencies as operating businesses at the expense of grass root funding, expansion and investment in revenue growing assets is a bad thing.
Sharks can only generate $11mill in revenue, how is topping them up to be profitable whilst we slash tens of millions out of grass roots and abandon our investment strategies a good thing?

Unless you're a successful businessman and club chairman I'm going to take Nick Politis' opinion over yours.
