CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

Not a fan of the idea. Sure everyone has there favourite player but i buy a jersey to show support for my team, not a player. If hindmarsh was to change teams the jersey under this new proposed system is kind of pointless. If I wanted someone to recognize a player with a particular number on my jersey I would go down myself and get 'Hayne' and a number '1' on it.
.
Most people are against this idea and if most people can't afford to take their kids to the football how can they afford to keep buying jerseys. The nrl should be looking at more ways to increase crowd numbers I know this is already happening with numbers up though.

I don't think people are so much against the idea as they are shocked by the fact these f**kwit CEOs think now is a good time to talk about such a move.

you see, the thing i don't get is the NRL have been promoting club membership all year and this is a perfect example where the CEO's can actually take this idea to the members of their club for a vote.

I f**ken hate the idea but at the end of the day it's not the most ball breaking topic the game needs to decide on, i actually think this topic is a slight diversion to the "we can't do anything about the cap because we've got no money" meeting that they had yesterday.

Again, could it be because they were trying to think of ways to increase income, therefore having a surefire way of pumping 'some' extra dollars into a new salary cap

I would buy a Dragons 10 Jersey, even more so if it said Weyman on it.

I realise you can get this done at some sporting shops, but to be honest, it looks poxy as sh*t.

Lol, a few people are getting carried away with 3,4 digit numbers. Obviously 99 would be the highest number.

judging from this thread, it seems that the majority of rugby league supporters are plain dumb as they need players to be assigned a number to indicate the position they're playing. cos many of you obviously cant work out that the speedy dude near the sideline is playing on the wing, or the little guy offloading the ball in the ruck is the dummy half, or the big boppa repeatedly taking the hit up is a forward.

it does work in terms of merchandising, when Kobe Bryant changed his number a few years back his jersey sales went through the roof. It would provide some cash to our broke clubs, but i like the current system.

Buy a clue and quite being a drama queen. They discussed the salary cap at length, which has been well accounted.

Why there's suddenly a moratorium on discussing anything else at a CEO's meeting is beyond me.

Maybe I'm wrong on my assumption about this group, and if I am I take back my comment. But I was of the impression that this working group was formed with the sole task of looking at the Salary Cap issue?

I've worked with enough sporting committee's in my professional role to know that most of them achieve absolutely nothing, and when they realise this, immediately change the subject to something completely irrelevant and try to get a win through that channel - that way they aren't exposed as completely incompetent.

(For the record - I'm not saying they didn't discuss the salary cap issue, I'm saying that it now appears clear that selecting a group of club CEO's to discuss a salary cap is never going to work. Don't let lunatics run the asylum - when will rugby league learn?)

Someone in that meeting referred to the fact cricketers (amongst others) have their own numbers. What they didn't point out was that it hasn't really caught on in cricket either.

The numbers are there to indicate position, not player. Sure, it's not vital if you know the game backwards, but it could create confusion among - and therefore turn off - potential new fans. If I wanted to torture myself by following fumbleball, I'd find it a lot easier if number = position.

BTW, it'd be a schidt-fight for 69 as well as 23...

Manu vatuvei to wear number 666 because he is the beast..

I agree with the sane majority, stupid crap idea.

I'm talking about understanding how the sport is played not why they are wearing a number.

The current system is linked to player position/role so aids in understanding. Individual numbers would take that out of our game altogether.

I think we underestimate the advantage of this.

Incidentally whos gonna wear number 96?
I'm surprised I have to explain this because not only is it pretty simple, most sports around the world adopt it...
There are no 3 digit numbers, have a look around.....do you see any players in the world with 3 digit numbers?

There is a system in place in which positions are grouped, in NFL for example the Quarterbacks and I think Special Teams...can have numbers 1-20 or there abouts (I might be slightly inaccurate:eek:).
And also if a number is taken already, that player must choose another available.

And the number will only go up a certain amount, so the amount of squad the team has would be numbered.

It's not that hard to understand really.
It's a fantastic idea. EVERY sport in the world aside from the two Rugby codes does this.

Yes, players move clubs. It happens. Ideally you'll buy a new jersey every 3-5 years anyway. So you get a different one - or you just keep the one you have...I still wear my Nakamura Celtic shirt even though he left last year.

People against this are probably the same bores who want a day grand final...idiots stuck in the 19th century with no idea about what makes money. How many people would buy Cavaliers jerseys if they couldn't rep LeBron? Lakers with Kobe? Liverpool with Gerrard/Torres? Real with C-Ron? It's just good business.

Agreed.
It's individuality, imagine JT, Scott Prince and Cooper Cronk all having different numbers, it would be fantastic.
It'd be meaningful to the players as well, some of the players in the NFL have had their number since they were kids....it shows how important the game is to them.

I hope they go through with it.

There's quite a few good points in that actually.

But I think the best point about the numbering issue came a few pages back when someone said - I don't support a player, I support the team. I'm exactly the same. I'm never going to buy a jersey with the number of just one player on it, there are 16 other blokes each weekend who I'm cheering on just as much as any one player in the Raiders.

Just bring back player names on jerseys.

Most other sports have names on jerseys as well as numbers. In our game numbers = position works well, so why change it?

A little kid who wants a jersey like their hero I would argue would more quickly associate with his name than a number.

Just a dumb idea...always has been, always will be. If that's all they have to worry about, then jeez we are in good shape...not

Ah so a young Bronco fan may not be able to easily associate with Darren Lockyer always wearing the Number 6, but will be able to more easily associate with him if he's always wearing the number 31.

What a stupid stupid concept.

Sums it up perfectly. The vast majority of the big name players have had the same number on their back for years anyway.

Just bring back named Jerseys, it achieves the same bloody thing.

Yeah, personalised numbers have really been holding back the popularity of soccer, basketball and gridiron
