Hayne threatens to quit NRL

ok, so that being the case, wouldn't you think that given that he's 3 years away (not 5) until his next renewl that he's genuinely concerned about the state of the game and the ability to keep their elite players?
He isn't signed until 2014?

I don't disagree with the idea of what he is saying. I took offence to his idol threat of playing for millions elsewhere at the end of his next contract. The game will go on without him, just like it has with SBW and Gaz et al.

It's a bold comment. The NRL>AFL experiment will have failed by then and they wont be looking to poach our players by then. Union will still be a threat no doubt - overseas that is. Super 15 will still be a boring joke with as much money as we have...

Stop whinging about money when you are paid around 11 times more than the average wage - the same wage that the average league fan shells out to support him and the rest of the league.

This is what sh*ts me whenever I read any of the elite/rep level players having a whinge or talking about other codes etc in the media.

Pull your f**king heads in you greedy merkins, geez you make it hard to support you and enjoy the footy sometimes!

It's a tough one, I can see both sides of the argument.

I hate seeing players taking off for the dollars, but we would all do it. Hayne just puts a target on himself for being outspoken about it, there's plenty of players that think the same way but wouldn't say it because they don't want the bad PR.

If Hayne goes there will be another player getting a shot at the NRL who may turn into a superstar as well. Rugby League is a great spectacle and there will always be players that look better than others, superstars.

Rugby League makes superstars, superstars don't make Rugby League.

oh Absolutely, of course it will, but when Joey signed what I think (correct me if I'm wrong) was his second last contract for your club with the top up from channel 9, did you form the same opinion?

He was vitally important to the Knights, but I'm fairly sure both the club and the game would have gone on without him.

I don't disagree that the game has to do something to fend off the threat of AFL and Union. However there is a right way and a wrong way of doing it, and shooting your mouth off saying you might go to another sport for millions in 5 years time is not the right way.

Hayne and the other players need to stop bitching in the media and grow some brains. Yes they get the short end of the stick relative to other codes. Cricketers get about 25% of total revenue generated, AFL players about 24.4%, NRL players only 19%.
http://www.smh.com.au/business/nrl-players-at-the-bottom-of-the-pile-20100309-pvrt.html

They do get screwed over but there's no point bitching in the media at their employers, they have a union. Its the players fault collectively if their union has negotiated a dud agreement with the NRL. Time to strengthen their union, primarily by getting someone with intelligence and a set of balls heading it. When its next up for negotiation they need to play hard ball at the table and use industrial action if they have to.

Yup.

Any cap increase should include a mandated increase in minimum wage first and foremost

It should, but the Lions share will always go to the elite. If you were elite, you would understand.

The issue isn't that players are greedy or holding the game to ransom or anything like that, it's that other codes are willing and able to offer these players much more money. Until the NRL changes the salary cap so that it doesn't artificially hold down player payments to such a ridiculous extent, the stars of the game will leave - and that's a problem.

Right. And human nature states that people who are good at what they do expect to be paid accordingly.

What do you think Hayne is worth to the game.
A hell of a lot.
Because of him a new generation of fans were brought to the game last year.
Imagine if he did sign to another code...these kids would have been devistated.
The code needs the new generations who come because of Benji,JArrod,Billy and co...these players attract the future of the games income.
They will buy merchandise, go to games get pay TV and then introduce their kids to the game...its a cycle.
So many of us are fans because of what we got into as a kid...so many of us didn't have as many choices.
Kids have so many choices today....go see the AFL or Union and their stars (Who ever they are)...or go see Benji and Jarrod...imagine these players were not here...go see Keating and Smith.
These players are not just worth alot for what they bring now....but what they bring for future.
It makes sense for everybody.
the players are happy and will stay.
The fans are happy and will go and spend.
Pay Tv has a futurue generation that will take up subscripion.
FTA has more future viewers.
Its a win win for all...pay them what they are worth and pay the fringe players who add depth what they are worth so they can earn a living here and not OS.

It is win win. People on here are dead set tools. We need icons.

This would be the same Hayne that turned down a larger $$ wise contract to stay with the Eels. I think it was Souths that was after him. He was also bitching his family only got 4 free tickets. Buy the family some you tight wad Haynes.

Yeah, but the stadiums are almost always never full. I dont see what the problem is. Its a small gripe perhaps, but it is one that typifies his argument. More can be done. There is a way, so find it, or your head will eventually be hacked off. This is the game on the chopping block IMHO.

Alot of jealous dopes in this thread wishing they could make the same amount of money as Hayne

Its not Jarryd Hayne's fault people have to slave away for hours on minmum wage, why don't they become a rugby league player if they want the same money as Hayne? is it Hayne's fault there not good enough to become a professional rugby league player like him? is it Haynes fault they can't find a better job? is it Haynes fault that parents decided to have 7 kids and now can't afford anything? is it Haynes fault people are too dumb to go to uni therefore they have to slave 50 hours a week on a forklift? is it Haynes fault you're too dumb and have to work at Blockbuster? is it Haynes fault you dropped out of school in year 10 because you're a tard? is it Haynes fault that you're on Centrelink?

LOL @ people who complain that Hayne earns alot of money because there too dumb and slave away for 40k a year, get a better job you losers or stop complaining about how much other people earn.

As smirk as that is, its right. A bit harsh, but right. Angry, but right.

I could see how people wont be likened to that. I wrote a post today about people being LAZY, AMBITIOUS, and SELFISH. Or dickheads.

They want it all but are too lazy to get off their arse, dedicate time and effort to make it. And then they resent Porche driving types and think he was "lucky" and things of that nature.

This is all human nature, and its not wrong. BUt it is contradictory, perhaps because the three atributes I mentioned developed separately for varying reasons. Evolution is chaos.

But thats people for you. And in this thread we see it again : dickheads by the dozen, sense from only a few. Maybe they thought it out.

By the same regard

Is it the ARL's fault that Haynes family are broke arse nobodies from the boondocks?

Is it the ARL's responsibility to look after said societal leeches and Hayne hangers on?

Is it the NRL's fault that Hayne has no future outside sport?

I doubt he is a leacher, or his family are broke. I know you are sad about it....bet you'd like a freebie....but guess what, you dont freaking work at a footy club, and your're not on the team so you would not know what its like. I think a conservative amount would be 10 free tickets. Big deal. Life is full of perks. If you are someone in relation to where you are at in life.

______

NRL, give them more money, give them more free tickets. Rep payments are a good place to start.

You know at the end of the day people, players only get a small amount of what the game earns. Other sports make 5-10% more maybe, some american sports much much higher.

The NRL is badly run, people are disgruntled, and yet you all think these guys are being greedy. They are not. They are saying they want their share - and they deserve it. Not foxtel or News ltd, or News CORP.....the players deserve it, they play the game, they make the wheel turn.

There are few more deserving than them in RL

We should be aiming to offer as much, if not more than other rival codes. They are in a situation where their earnings have been artificially limited, and its only natural to want to be paid more. I think the hidden message is these guys want to stay with RL, and they are finding it hard to accept they dont get more of the pie and other sports are run better. Its no secret, and the games is one fumble after another atm.

You clowns dont understand a thing about elite sportspeople. Or people who are among the best at what they do. Not everyone can do that, and with the rareity of these skills comes a high expectation of reward. The rareity = high value = big earnings. Elite people think differently to burger flippers or factory workers. They are dedicated and good at what they do, often brilliant. To feel as tho they are getting less for that kind of thing is a big kick in the teeth. Few sports people get to this level and play for just the love when they can earn money. Sure people do play sport for the love of it, but when you get into money, no one is going to accept the lesser of two offers unless its for a very good reason, and love, guys (sorry girls) is a logical incarnation of the attributes of attraction that are as primeval and as old as our species.....which basically means, love is WAY down the order of priorities....

Yeah, so anyway, you guys need to get a clue. Pay them more, and make no excuses. ffs, elite sports people are laughing at you lot right now, and rather bemused. Ever ask a Bank boss to take 60k a year??? He'd tell you to f off. Elite-high rewards in a market. And human nature demands that. I dont blame Hayne at all

God it annoys me when players come out with these statements. Please, tell us something we don't know. We know that the best players receive offers from other codes during their careers. We know that they consider them. We know that Gallop has to act in order to keep more of them in the NRL. It makes a player seem arrogant when they come out as Hayne has done. Star players have left before, is it news that you are leaving because you think the game be in disrepute after the loss?

Hayne needs to shut up. It seems to me like he is starting to believe what is written about him. Yes he was a superstar in the second half of last year but it doesn't make him any different to Williams, Gasnier, Hunt etc. Like them, by all means he can f**k off because he will be replaced too. I don't watch a Dragons game now and think "Oh man, I wish Gasnier was playing!". I would have the same attitude if Hayne left.

I am all for players being paid more if we can afford it, however any increase has to go to the lower end players on minimum wage that play in the NRL first up, not the stars getting $400k +. Thats what these players should be speaking out about, their team mates who get bashed just as much as them week in week out and are held up to be role models but only get $55k to $100k for their troubles.

Exactly the same as Gart.

Look at guys like Kevin Kingston last year, he was toiling away, playing an instrumental role in Parra's GF run yet got peanuts for it. People like Hayne however, who are earning 400-500k a year, aren't content with what they have and want more, even though this year he has done nothing to warrant his current contract, let alone more.

People are making out he called a press conference to make his announcement. He was asked a question, and answered it, truthfully. I forgot that most people who are dumb enough to think what the media want them to prefer the response; "Im not looking that far ahead, just taking it one game at a time".

We all have players we love to hate, and when the media plays on this, and we jump in and lay in the boot, we look foolish.

I also think some of the responses were a bit rich, but so have been some peoples reactions.

How many players do we loose, very few, how may many future stars come through every year - See Canberra as a prime example.
