    Rugby League is Dying

The rugby union old boy network in the UK and Australia are an implacable foe.

    2015 Crowd Watch part III

They are probably just trying to maximize revenue. They did a successful job from that perspective, just about selling out Origin but it's a dangerous game. The ARU did a similar thing in the run up to the RWC 2003 - making it a "premium event" but failed to sell out any of the quarter finals...

    2015 Crowd Watch part II

This is a straw man - "More and more people desert the stadiums" - The crowd fluctuations are statistically fairly insignificant 3%-4% up or down - probably depending on the form of the most popular teams, the weather. What has happened since 2005 is that crowds have plateaued....and nothing...

    2015 Crowd Watch part II

In 1988, the year the SFS opened Origin 1 got a crowd of 24,000, Origin III got 16,000 for the dead rubber. Darrell Eastlake commented about the empty seats to Jack Gibson, and noted the seats were $40. Gibson said: "It's a working man's game, they should charge a working man's price". Know...

Why are commemorative t-shirts a thing?

I've ordered two for delivery to Singapore

    crowd watch 2014 part IV

Great game , great crowd. The media obsession with the Swans and the rugby union clique like Fitzsimons jumping on that bandwagon has an effect. In addition the sheer idiocy and negativity of "RL" journos like Andrew Webster at SMH has been a factor in reducing the buzz around the NRL this year.

    crowd watch 2014 part IV

You can stay at home your whole life and save money and pat yourself on the back. Or you could go to the game and live a little.

    Karmichael Hunt

Yeh, I remember the basketball interview. I follow him on Twitter and would say Golf is his main thing now.

    Crowd Watch 2014 part 3

I tweeted the journo about the netball article. Tbf in the original AFR article, the headline didn't mention NRL. The SMH subs put that spin on it and rewrote the lede. Pretty poor and deliberately misleading stuff.

    Crowd Watch 2014 part 2

This isn't a new phenomenon. if you remember back in 1988 when they played Origin 1 and 3 at then brand new Sydney Football Stadium, the crowds were 24,000 and 16,000 respectively, if I recall correctly. During the commentary on game 3, Darrell Eastlake was bemoaning the empty seats given the...

    Offsiders

It's not the 10 mins of AFL, 5 mins of A-league, 5 mins of MLB (in Sydney ?!) that offends me. It's just that they pretend this is a general sports show. They should just have a disclaimer saying the rugby codes are of no interest to them so won't be covered in the show. Right now it's just...

    Crowd Watch 2014

Given the Thursday night timeslot the crowd wasn't that bad. RL fans pick and choose which games they go to and the location of that stadium always limits the crowd. The Waratahs overhyped game against the Reds on a Saturday afternoon getting 18,000 was a lot worse in my opinion. If the...

    More bad RLWC press coming...

That whole thing was weird. If the police had dropped it did Mascord really expect some club official to just say - "yes he's a wifebeater, here's a pic of her injured" . I wouldn't do that to any one of my colleagues because, frankly, if the police had looked at it, it would no longer be any of...

    Expected crowds for the tournament

Cannot believe that crowd - Especially given the lack of accessible TV coverage. Very good effort.

    Bring back Rabs

I thought Shaun Edwards was very good. Funny & insightful. Vossy and halligan got a bit holier than though over the Burgesss high tackle. Australians have got away with far worse over the years (Willie Mason 2006 anyone?). It was a penalty, that's all.

    Stars get behind England

It's a great vid. We'll beat the aussies. Maybe not this weekend, but one day, and soon. Too many aussie league personalities (rabs even!) and fans are content to watch the international game struggle, even though it will ultimately undermine the NRL if the game doesn't grow...and that will be...

Any idea on SE Asia? Setanta does not appear to have it.

    Crowd Watch, Part III

I don't agree NRL crowds lack passion. It's Australian crowds in general and, if anything, NRL crowds are louder than their peers in other sports. The atmosphere at the finals games has been great. I've got mates from the UK who went to the recent British Lions union series and they all...
