Soward keeps quiet over rumours he'll be rested

Glenn Jackson | August 7, 2009

LATE MAIL

There have been suggestions St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett was considering resting five-eighth Jamie Soward for tonight's clash with Penrith.

Soward has been nursing a shin injury suffered against Melbourne last Friday night, and only took part in light training yesterday.
When contacted last night, Soward - one of the form players in the competition - did not deny that he might not play against the Panthers, referring the Herald to the club's media officials. "I can't even tip you off about that," he said.

Bennett does have options at his disposal. With Jeremy Smith returning from an ankle injury, he has an extra back-rower, which might allow Dean Young to play five-eighth. Hooker Nathan Fien could also be shifted into the halves.

Jon Green has dropped off the extended Dragons bench.

Penrith are almost certain to have both Luke Lewis (broken toe) and Frank Pritchard (shoulder) available for the game after both trained well this week.

This wouldn't surprise me at all if it did happen. The Dragons have the minor premiership all but wrapped up and he is carrying an injury. Good time to let him freshen up and see how the team travels without him.

As a Penrith fan it'd be good in a way, though I'd prefer to see how our team stacks up against a full strength Dragons side.

If they do rest him though. The Dragons would of been better off taking the not guilty plea and clearing his points had he lost.
Exactly, they would have contested the charge if they planned on resting him. He'll be playing without a doubt. Just more mind games from Bennett.

Gonna be a great game. Penrith are a better team than they have showed, and they will aim up tonight.

Yep. Hopefully Luke Lewis is back in the same sort of form he was in prior to injury. He was a great leader for our side earlier in the season. The excitement of this game pretty much rests on whether or not the Panthers show up tonight. If we don't it's simply going to be a blowout. If we do... it should be a pretty close battle for the most part. Dragons obviously be the team more likely to walk away with a win.

For some reason, today I feel a lot more confident about this game than before, whereas normally it's the other way around.
I think we'll actually come away with a massive upset tonight.

I'm confident we will show up to play, but i can't see us grabbing a win. Not unless the Dragons are either off their game, or we manage to improve our error rate a sh*tload for tonight.

We're certainly as good as any team in attack whent he passes stick, but we cough up the ball too often and remove pressure. Dragons work best when they play teams that do that... they punish sides for errors.

Should be a good game, particularly if Soward is out. However, I can't get past the fact that the Warriors scored 32 points against the Panthers last week, and barely looked like scoring against the Dragons defence the week before..

Grant and Woolnough drop off Penrith's extended bench.

We now have NO props on the bench... gonna be tough.
