Just been doing some online research on the state of league and afl in southern NSW. Isn’t pleasant reading. In group 9 Wagga brothers have announced that they will be init be in first grade this year following the announcement Junee will return. Afl has consolidated in the region and it’s generally believed has an advantage over league now. Happily it appears that the nrl particularly the Raiders are putting more effort into the area. This is what happens when you rest on your laurels and take things for granted. The inroads take time and commitment but our biggest competitor has bothered. This is one of the big arguments for genuine expansion. And that means forcing your biggest competitor to look over their shoulder. Union isn’t the issue. It’s afl. Placing a team in Perth and investing in football in Victoria and WA including in their regional areas will pay dividends over time. This is the long game.

Every sport understands this, except us.

Southern NSW has always been a strong afl area. Has breed Paul Kelly, Wayne Carey, Alex jesaulenko (colk can spell check that). Don't see how putting team in Perth & Melbourne addresses that but that's league unlimited logic right there..

Then try reading it again. Pretty simple argument. We are losing traction in our home markets. Challenge them in theirs.

Wagga has never been our home market tbf
The whole group has struggled for some time and afl in the region isn’t. It was always 50/50. It’s generally accepted that is no longer the case. The afl gained its advantage by pushing women’s football in the region. We are only now catching up. It’s not dire and is fixable. Just over the border is the Murray Cup. A league regional comp in Victoria. Logic tells me we should push for development and growth there. The more football we can have in the general area the better. That includes nsw and vic around the border.

100%. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t warrant discussion. If the Murray Cup can gain traction in the juniors you might see a change in the balance in the general region. If they are moving into our region why aren’t we moving into th heirs? By the way it is generally accepted that Temora, which had generally been considered rusted on rugby league, is now 50/50. There comes a time that we as a code need to respond.

Temora is league

baz came from there

personal thing I just don’t see afl making much inroads in our juniors ever

they can spend billions it won’t matter

partly because of body types partly because it’s a foreign sport

juniors don’t play league for money

The ones they get they can keep as they’d never make it in league anyway. Our juniors across nsw and qld are still very good and the pathways are strong. On a separate note what the hell is going on with EA in the fight club?

Guess he’s a redneck lmao

I was trying to stay out of it

just try and ignore it imo

afl has made huge inroads into union juniors in nsw and qld

similar body types

I was worried about afl a decade ago when they had double the money we had

now it’s a pretty even fight and one which we can win imo

Agree completely. They’ve wrecked rugby Union which went on an ego trip after the World Cup two decades ago. They’ve attacked all their markets and senior union officials like John O’Neill have become swans members. That’s how much they hate league. We’ve gotta beat these bastards mate. As for EA - time for Iggy. That really is ugly.
