or maybe.... a lot of people who attend Lions games also follow NRL? I know plenty of Vic expats and some I have spoken to that have adopted an NRL team. I know an old guy at work who is victorian and loves his AFL but also loves Souths and can talk very knowledgeably about them. I know another guy who migrated up here from Vic with his family during covid and he's a big Eels fan. I think this forum where you can only support one code and all NRL followers hate AFL and all AFL followers hate League does not reflect reality.
Some of the more wealthy - upper middle class types probably won't touch League - but there's plenty like that who are from NSW and QLD.
That's far too complex a concept for the simple minds on here!

This is all just speculation mixed with anecdotal observations.

There is no evidence that AFL is targeting Southern Brisbane specifically at all.

This seems to be some poor attempt at a scare campaign to try to push your agenda for an NRL team on your doorstep

If they're not targeting southern Brisbane then why is their social club and training centre based in Logan and Ipswich?

Why do they invest money in Logan's fumbleball clubs?

I've lived in southern Brisbane for almost 38 years. I know what I've seen with my eyes.

AwFuL targeting schools across Logan, including RL powerhouse Mabel Park State High. The know-it-all who lives in Melbourne says it's not true.

AFL program gets students ready to roar

Published: 24th October 2022

A new, school-based Australian rules outreach program is set to help City of Logan high school students realise their potential on and off the field.

The Logan Lions Youth Academy, developed by Brisbane Lions Football Club and supported by Logan City Council, was launched at Mabel Park State High School in Slacks Creek today.

The program will provide tailored AFL skills training for up to 50 students each year, with a strong focus on mental and physical health, nutrition, leadership and wellbeing.

The creation of the academy is part of a long-standing agreement between Logan City Council and Brisbane Lions to support the development of sport in the city.

The club has contributed more than $1 million to City of Logan sporting programs since the construction of the Lions @ Springwood (Pannikin Street) facility in 2009.

Mayor Darren Power said the new academy was about providing students with opportunities for success not only in sport, but in other areas of life.

“We are delighted to support Brisbane Lions in the rollout of this important program, which will cater to the needs of the whole athlete, not only their sporting abilities,” Cr Power said.

“It is no secret that we have a wealth of sporting talent in the City of Logan and this is yet another pathway for our ambitious young sportspeople to succeed.”

Places in the Logan Lions Youth Academy will initially be available to interested students enrolled at Mabel Park SHS.

In coming years, the program will be extended other City of Logan senior and primary schools, which will also be able to access support for sporting infrastructure and equipment.

The academy’s first class of students will learn first-hand from high-profile Brisbane Lions AFLW player Courtney Hodder, who has recently joined Mabel Park SHS’ student support staff.

Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann said the club was thrilled to launch a long-term project that would provide significant opportunities for students in the City of Logan.

“Over the years many talented athletes have come from the Logan region, and we are confident the academy will see that continue,” Mr Swann said.

“One of our AFLW players, Courtney Hodder, is a great example of a young athlete who tried different sports and is now one of the best small forwards in the AFLW competition.

“With access to not only equipment and infrastructure, but our academy coaches and high-performance resources, we hope to see many athletes follow in Courtney’s footsteps.”

City Lifestyle Chair Councillor Laurie Koranski said the academy was another way the City of Logan would build on its reputation for sporting success.

“Council recognises the vital that role sport, and access to sport, plays in the development of healthy and connected communities,” Cr Koranski said.

“We are proud to support initiatives that promote and encourage participation in sport among our youth, who have so many pathways ahead of them.”

Division 3 Councillor Mindy Russell said Mabel Park SHS was an ideal home for the new sporting program.

“Mabel Park is one of the fastest-growing high schools in our city, and its staff and students are already kicking goals in many ways,” Cr Russell said.

“The school is among local leaders in education and student wellbeing with initiatives such as its Health Hub and Certificate III course in drone piloting, STEM, CityStudio and Catapult activities as well as strong achievements on the sporting field in recent years.

“I cannot think of a better fit for this ground-breaking AFL academy.”

Broncos should have owned the 1.25mill north of the river and Firehawks the1.25mill south of the river with particular focus on Logan and Ipswich. Sigh.

Mabel Park State High is one of the largest rugby league nurseries in the world. AwFuL is targeting 50 of its students per year. Over the next few years they're going to set up similar programs in other schools across Logan.

There's a good chance that the next Cameron Smith, Joseph Papali'i, Darren Smith, Jason Smith and Corey Parker will be playing fumbleball for the Lions.

No, broncos & tigerhawks would've just been centered around inner city & Morton bay would be up for grabs too.
Demo for Logan leans towards NRL strongly anyway.

Logan has produced more players for Queensland than any other city in the state.

AwFuL is targeting Logan to weaken the Broncos, Titans and Queensland Origin team. A strong Lions can make serious inroads under these circumstances.

If they want to be recognised in their home state they’ll stick to the steeden. I literally can’t name a single current Brisbane Lions player.
Yeh tough choice

play rugby league and be a star in the state

play afl and be a nobody

can you imagine being an afl player in qld during origin and they realise how meaningless their sport is up there

If they can earn more money playing fumbleball and are provided more opportunities to secure an AwFuL contract then they'll choose to play for the Lions.

Kids are impressionable and will follow the money.

The revenue gap between AwFuL and NRL will increase significantly in 2025. Don't be surprised if the salary cap for fumbleball grows steadily.

Just because AFL start investing in one particular region of Brisbane doesn't mean League is lost there lol. Kids from Logan will still play League and make their way up to Qld cup and then NRL if they are good enough. Cameron Smith got picked up by Norths Devils - on the north side even though he played his junior league in Logan.

200 million spent and they rank last

Brisbane will be no different

meanwhile rugby league increases actual junior numbers across the board

AwFuL doesn't need to stop every kid in Logan from playing rugby league to hurt the game in Queensland. It just needs to identify the best athletes at a young age and sign them to a long-term development contract.

AwFuL's coffers are loaded like never before thanks to the terrible broadcast deal signed by V'landys.

AwFuL has more than enough money to fund more development officers across Logan and sign the best talent to development contracts.

Our game doesn't have the money to compete in this space.

V'landys agreed to a staunch increase in funding to the RLPA and greedy clubs. Revenue from broadcast rights and other avenues has barely increased. That means money will be taken out of grassroots football to fund the NRL.

This is how our game will fall behind our main rival.

You of all people know that fumbleball is making inroads across Brisbane's schools. Your partner is a teacher and has seen it with her own eyes. AwFuL is now going after Logan because it's the jewel in the crown of rugby league's production line of talent.

If Moreton Bay Area can support the dolphins at Suncorp they could support the broncos at Suncorp.
No one is targeting the south other than afl still. The fact we are talking About the need for a brisbane3 already shows what a Clusterfck of a decision it was, strategically speaking

These are worrying times. As yet, there is no effective vaccine.

The Queensland government should close the border to Vic migrants and quarantine any who slip through until they are clear of the AFL virus.
A healthy robust early exposure to Rugby League does seem to provide an effective immunity for the local population though.
For those already afflicted I can only suggest more forced listening to AC/DC and much less ABBA, a diet high in red meat and a strict avoidance of any meals containing too many vegetables.

Not if Brisbane 3 is more viable than any other option. Leaves opening & specific location for already established bid jets/ firehawks merger
