This is how you can do expansion properly when you have a $900mlll revenue and more to come........

He is attempting to win over stadium doubters with a promise that should a Tasmanian team get up, the AFL will invest $360 million in the state over the next 10 years.
About $90 million of that will go to local and grassroots development — things like participation programs, coaching and umpiring — to grow the game.
Another $30 million will go into three new talent academies in the state — in the north, north-west and south — to foster young male and female talent.
McLachlan has previously announced the AFL will chip in $15 million towards the Hobart stadium build.

Its a good question, theres been attempts but ultimately all have failed. Its a real shame the world league never continued back in early 90's, that was an amazing comp and well before its time in terms of globalisation of sport.

I guess cost plays a big factor, and college football fills the level below NFL for many fans.

you completely missed the point lol. This is what AFL is willing to invest in making sure expansion is successful at all levels. You can have that strategy when you're earning the money to do it. Maybe some of the NRL's $63mill surplus will go to another DO for WA and we can have 5 to cover the whole state lol

If they have that money to invest into tasmania why not invest it now in the stadium

they want the govt to spend 700 mill on a new stadium and also invest 8 million pa in the team to make sure they don’t go broke

Then they’ll buy the stadium and take all the profit out of it. It’s the only thing that makes sense. Government pays for it. Afl waits 4-5 years and buys it at a discount. They own Hobart city effectively - woo hoo

and are sweetening the deal by investing $120mill of the games money in grassroots in Tassie and player development. That's how you get Govts over the line!
Meanwhile NRLWA gets its funding cut and still no sign of an NRL team unless Sydneys involved lol

ps pretty sure its the Tassie govt driving this, not the AFL asking for it. I'm confident the AFL would much rather not have byes and a struggling regional club.

Wonder if they don’t get that team how much their tv deals go down by
Id be very very surprised if 19 clubs was sold as a guaranteed part of the deal. Theres still lots of funding hoops for tassie to jump through before they'll be admitted. Though the AFLs grassroots announcement does suggest they are now leaning towards getting them in so who knows? Normally expansion would be announced as part of the deal, not an afterthought. I doubt Tassie is of much value to TV one way or the other.

haha, you think NRL has the money to put $120 mil into grassroots RL in WA? How cute.

But you missed the point, shocking I know! HAs the NRL even sat down with WA Govt and negotiated what they'd want to see for a Perth club to be next?

no idea tbh. It seemed like they didnt want Tassie and were trying their best to not go there. Maybe its in the deal, but then maybe it isnt given it still seems a fair way of being agreed theyll be admitted.

Sure I do

but we know the Perth govt would never spend that kind of money on a league team so the point is moot

imagine tasmania can come up with this kind of money and Perth won’t
