Yes yes yesThe next 3 teams will be WA first, followed by Brisbane3/NZ2. Give time for the Phins to become stablished. By 2032, we could have a 20 team competition
But wait, don't they have a better geographical spread than us?Yes yes yes
and that would blow afl off the park
Png plus 19 millionBut wait, don't they have a better geographical spread than us?
Wait, no they don't. Out of the top 10 population centres in Aus & NZL, RL is dominant over AFL in more of them.
Sydney - RL dominant
Melbourne - AFL dominant
Brisbane - RL dominant
Perth - AFL dominant
Auckland - RL dominant
Adelaide - AFL dominant
Gold Coast - RL dominant
Newcastle - RL dominant
Canberra - RL dominant
Sunshine Coast - RL dominant
As the world increasingly moves to streaming (be it FTA streaming or paid services) and you can more accurately measure views, it will be eyeballs on screens that count, not archaic guestimating based on 5 capital city models. AFL don't dominate the major population centres outside of Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide which is why they are desperately pissing money against the wall in NSW & QLD to try and get a foothold. While we can expand without having to break the bank.

pretty accurate, although Id argue that melb has decent presence of RL if you are saying that Canberra and Brisbane have decent AFL presencethis is a little disingenuous and simplistic. RL is not dominant in Auckland...i'm not sure if I would even call it dominant in Canberra....
Sydney - RL dominant, AFL decent presence
Melbourne - AFL extremely dominant, RL small presence
Brisbane - RL dominant, AFL decent presence
Perth - AFL dominant, RL no presence
Auckland - RL decent presence, AFL no presence
Adelaide - AFL dominant, RL no presence
Gold Coast - RL dominant, AFL decent presence
Newcastle - RL dominant, AFL no presence

AFL presence in Sydney is legit in two suburbs...Pyrmont and Newtownthis is a little disingenuous and simplistic. RL is not dominant in Auckland...i'm not sure if I would even call it dominant in Canberra....

It's not really simplistic, the major population areas in Australia are RL dominant areas. NSW and QLD not only have large capital cities but he rural populations of both states are huge and us having Auckland more than offsets a city like Adelaide.this is a little disingenuous and simplistic. Yep, we absolutely need to get our shit together better than we have in the past, which currently seems to be happening. But once we fully leverage our heartlands properly and put in a Perth team the giant would have awoken. AFL have never really had a full-strength RL comp to compete with apart from a brief period in the early 90's.Tl

We'll see how good they are when we are actually taking the fight property to them.
the perception is they have every major metro area covered by 2 or more teams - Melb, Syd, SEQLD, Perth, Adelaide... Us having teams in NQLD, Newcastle, Canberra and Auckland is wonderful but sadly broadcasters and sponsors don't see as much value in these areas. It's not really simplistic, the major population areas in Australia are RL dominant areas. And if you read my original post correctly, the term dominant referred to one code being dominant over the other in that city, not it being the dominant sport (Auckland being a prime example where RU is king)
It’s 28 years since that time and afl grows bigger than us every year In terms of revenue (Biggest revenue gap last year in a decade and that’s before the next tv deals widen it even more).Yep, we absolutely need to get our shit together better than we have in the past, which currently seems to be happening. they have more revenue, we make higher profitsIt’s 28 years since that time and afl grows bigger than us every year In terms of revenue (Biggest revenue gap last year in a decade and that’s before the next tv deals widen it even more).
How long realistically till we close that gap and overtake them? Probably 20 years plus at least, and that’s if every goes our way and they somehow screw some of their business up.
getting a succesful perth club in next is the next step But then we’ll probably still be ten years plus away from game ten becoming a reality.
I say next club should be the Perth Bears. Love the idea of bringing back Norths.
Then Adelaide Jets (bring back Newtown's identity too)
Finally the South Pacific Cyclones, who play all around the Pacific (4 games and finals in Christchurch, 2 games in Wellington, 2 in PNG, 2 in Fiji, 1 in Tonga and 1 in Samoa)
20 teams, been there, done that, and there's far more talent now.
Storm franchise includes Tasmania
Adelaide includes NT
Then everyone has a team.

The Cowboys are the outlier here as the revenue they generate from sponsorship has been among the highest in the competition since they were formed.
The problem is we have a few so-called "heartland" teams in Sydney generating f**k-all revenue from sponsorship. There's not enough active rugby league fans in the market to support nine clubs.
AwFuL has more than enough active supporters in Melbourne to prop up most of its teams. The only one that's really struggling right now is North Melbourne, yet it is probably not much weaker than the strongest NRL clubs in Sydney.
