The size of the players has changed the game As Well
Coaches have evolved As Well
Don't need 1 player to Risk everything on 1 play
It's about percentages
Completion rate
Kicking game
Kick chase
Rock solid wall of stifling defence
Some players can run the whole team
Other teams rely on the coaches
Check out Phil Blake Chip kick's
Andrew John's masterful kicking game
You Tube videos
Ok 😂

One rule i would change today....no restart of tackle count when a player charges down the ball.
I started a thread on that very rule change on the Pommy Forum nearly three years ago. It really is difficult to think why it could not be at least trialled.
If you want the ball on the deck and the unpredictability that comes with that or more helter-skelter play when the kicker can`t get their kick away, then the best way is to encourage the charge-down.

My favorite sports are American Football, Rugby League, Soccer. In no order really. They all have their special qualities, differences, exciting/interesting aspects.

I'm an American by birth/upbringing, but I can honestly say there's no more exciting action in all of sports than a chain-passing RL long-range Try. A great soccer goal is up there but it's usually a moment. Gridiron isn't as spectacular, but what it has is a lot of momentum shifts and drama.

I can't watch AFL, Rugby Union is ok, but not as good as RL.

Downsides...

American Football...no chain passing, blocking-centric.

Soccer....too much dead play with players passing the ball around.

RL....too much one-out, no blocking, too much caution with the ball in your own half of the field, whereas in Gridiron they often go for the big play no matter where on the field they are.

It's one area of RL i have rule ideas that could possibly help in that regard.

I remember years ago suggesting to friends that RL could use the kicking game like Gridiron uses the forward pass, to add a second dimension...and lo and behold years later we started seeing that ...players just kicking the ball across the field to an open Winger (kind of like a QB throwing a forward pass to a WR) or grubbing the ball on early tackles etc. Whereas older days it was far more cautious play.

Dunno exactly what rule, but something maybe along the lines of when you have the ball in your own 40 you can't lose the ball from a knock-on or something to try to urge teams to fling the ball about more.
Apparently back in the 30s nfl was a lot like league with backwards passes

Your "older days" obviously don`t go back very far mate. It wasn`t always thus. There was a time in the 70`s and 80`s where players would try the chip and chase from anywhere on the field, the Poms particularly loved them. Offloading in traffic was also the norm as ref`s weren`t so hung up on calling every dropped ball a knock-on.
No, it was when coaches started to realise that you can`t win without the ball that we started going down the path of conservatism and playing for position. Not helped by scrums becoming less of a contest as well.
It`s a funny thing but I can remember as a child watching St. George and thinking who`s going to receive the ball from the kick-off, even back then my child`s mind knew that you can`t score if you don`t have the ball. Of course, the coaches have taken it to a whole different level.
55 to 66

dregins prided themselves on kicking the ball to the opposition then belting the daylights out of them in defence

then once they were softened up they would run amock in attack

You are very right about that too....older days there was a lot more offloads, chip and chases, and also weird but cool set moves like the rolling scrum or whatever from the Eels 70s, or the Gibson Eels 80s wall or whatever. Wish there was more of that. Also used to play forcings back in the 70s.
We’ve unearthed a 22 year old who loves a chip and chase!

A second Melbourne club probably won't be feasible for at least another decade or so at the very earliest, and realistically even longer than that. But it is inevitable given time and assuming continued growth, and the NRL should have it in their long term plans.

Reality is if Nick wants this enough you only need a few other clubs to agree even if the crap clubs complain nobody cares what they think

if we go 3 extra clubs one has to be Perth that’s a must

You have a few exceptions but generally expansion in this country has been poorly done.

If they do rush ahead with 3 new teams, Then I am happy if it involves linking up with Firehawks or the Bears.

Whatever maximises the chances that it will work

Theres @TheRam and @AdelaideSharky and their Govt that want a team in Adelaide... thats one more than WA...
But yeah lets ditch the competitions values, members, current fans, for areas that are looking for hand outs to grow there game in their backyard...
Expansion is all about keeping whats there and adding to it... its literally the definition of it, most of these posts past few pages have been against that notion
Mate, I'd love a team here but I'm realistic that we need a new stadium first.

Our bread and circuses government is too busy playing pass the sausage with the AFL with this Gather Round nonsense in a blatant rip off of RL's Magic Round than getting a proper rectangular stadium.

People are forgetting the aim is to have 3 new teams within 9 years.

There is room for Adelaide, A stand alone PNG team just not in that time frame. 2040 is a more realistic target

'In time' being the important bit. Say 10-15 years depending how Titans and Dolphins are going. We havent seen the impact, if any, of Dolphins on the other SEQ clubs yet. Just 26k at Broncos on Saturday night, have their fans abandoned them already?
The concern here is the Titans - what if they don't shape-up in 10-15 years time?

As long as AFL has a team there, I guess they'll stay.. but got to think that if the Suns weren't a thing, maybe the Titans would be moved to Brisbane.. yeah?

Or Both, firehawks in Perf, Bears in Adelaide, PNG/Cairns based... Pasifika won't work if its set up in Qld, needs to be setup in NZ, like the RU had done

I agree. No iteration of the Giants/Chargers/Seagulls/Gladiators lasted longer than six seasons.

The Titans are now in their 16th.

But they've been on death's door. Remember when they were going to become the Bears? I reckon the Suns' presence has sured up the Tirans' presence on the Gold Coast (and probably vice versa).

The Titans doing poorly has nothing to do with where they are; it`s because they haven`t got it right yet.
Fair enough, but it seems that rugby league isn't alone in finding the Gold Coast a challenge - other sports have had teams there, and they've struggled too.

I'm not saying the place is cursed.. but maybe there's a distinct set of problems to be tackled in that market?

Yeah, well possibly you might think that money may have been the problem, a lack of corporates whatever, but looking at their roster there`s nothing wrong with that team on paper, quite a few stars in there. So it makes me think that they just haven`t got it quite right at the club yet and that may well take twenty years, christ, look at the Sharks, Panthers et. al not a lot of success there early on either.
