What does everyone think of this idea for Pacific pathway? The part I really like is that it does offer high quality player pathway opportunities for local residents that should see RL take an even bigger stranglehold on the region. There is plenty of talk about improving political connections/relations in the Pacific and it shouldn’t be outside the realms of opportunity to source both Aus and US government funding support for this idea.

It also gives local opportunity at a relevant standard. I just don’t see an NRL club being based out of any pacific island (bar NZ). The financial resources are simply not there.

Queensland Cup is thinking about adding a team from New Caledonia.

That’s interesting. They would be an obvious useful addition to a PRL. I would be very surprised if there is enough talent to create a New Caledonian team capable for winning a match in any of the Sydney A grade comps, let alone be competitive with QRL sides.

A great addition though if they can pull it off. Might be a handy leg up for the French national team.

I think it’s New Caledonia pushing this. It’s a flight of fancy at best.

Fair enough. I am not super into the Pirates moniker (probably because of the Disney aspect that you mentioned) but I don’t think logos are super important.

If they were you wouldn’t think many of the competition’s existing team logos would work.

Is there anything really unique to West Australia that you could market other than the Swan?

Reds was a great brand. Even if they can’t or wouldn’t use Reds anymore because of the RU team WA/Perth/West Coast ‘Red Kangaroos’ would be great well. It would be unmistakable that’s for sure.

Doesn’t Perth/Western Australia have a gold rush history?

could maybe incorporate that into a name/brand somehow.

animals and fish etc are probably the most preferred though.

Why do people keep say that Wellington or Christchurch aren't big enough to sustain an NRL team?

Completely false.

They are both substantially bigger than Townsville...
Of course their reach goes outside of Townsville to all of North Queensland
But that's still substantially less also to all of NZ outside of Auckland..

As I watch a sold out Cowboys game...

It’s a good idea except for the bit about the Warriors reserves playing there which would just gut the Warriors depth as their reserves wouldn’t be playing against the same caliber of opposition as the rest of the NRLs reserve teams. They need to stay in NSW Cup.

eh? Rl is the number one sport in nq, it is not in Wellington or Christchurch.
Tbf though nq have done an amazing job in generating football club revenue.

itd be like afl thinking it’s a good idea to put a team in Townsville because geelong works.

There is a sight difference: All Blacks/Rugby Union is the king over there. So it is a challenge. Places like Townsville and Newcastle are smarter and realise that RL is the better sport.

Help having a team there....

Sure. I’m not saying that you can’t create a niche or that it won’t work (I think it will) but I’m just being realistic. It will be a lot harder than just plonking a side there.

You seem to disregard the fact that the All Blacks are a religion over there; thus, it is a challenge. Anything outside of plonking another side in QLD for example will have its challenges.

How often do the All blacks play there through the year?
Irrelevant to the prospect of a franchise.
The only weekly competition is the Super Rugby sides and that’s only competitive for a handful of games.
The NRL is a superior product hands down.

More than a opportunity for a Christchurch/South Island NRL team to carve out a niche following especially with stupor rugby flopping big time.

Not going to be a " Niche" it'll be the biggest ticket in town.
The NRL dwarfs Super Rugby. Give them a team and see how quickly they take to week in week out action with the most talented athletes for 26 weeks .
The Blues got a dismal crowd, admittedly by Union fans that was due to the Warriors playing at the same time.
I'd be Surprised if Super Rugby still exists in 10 years.

The time is now, Rugby League can take NZ.

But that’s the thing though: why do you think anybody from NZ plays Super Rugby? They play it to try and play for the All Blacks. That’s what you are up against.

For example, why do you think that Benji Marshall or RTS or SBW defected to union? Do you think they defected to go because they wanted to play for the Auckland Blues or the Crusaders etc?

Do you think Sualii or Mario Koribeite or Vunivalu or Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuquiri before them defected to go and play for the crappy Super Rugby franchises. Of course not.

Every league player who goes, goes for money and the opportunity to play international rugby. It is clearly a bigger international sport. That’s their trump card
