It would if baseball had taken over the local club competition

That’s a perfect analogy actually and something I was going to use. There would be literally thousands more people watching MLB in Australia than there would be watching the Sheffield Shield - I think there was a stat where the MLB is one of the most popular competitions.

Yet after all that how many people play baseball? How many people would watch the domestic baseball competition? How many people would watch the national baseball team (who are nicknamed the Thunder btw). Not many. In fact international baseball as a whole (at least from our perspective) wouldn’t be anywhere near as significant as international cricket.

That’s the thing: the comparison isn’t between the domestic competitions. You have to work out what draws people (athletes/crowd) to the other sport. For example for people to care about baseball outside of MLB and take over cricket you actually have to demystify the whole baggy green thing, the cultural thing that Australians have with cricket.

Same with RL and Union. In order for RL to take over Union in that country you have to make the All Blacks and the cultural affinity they have with that team irrelevant. That’s not going to happen by just plonking a side there. It would require mountains of investment over a long term as well as good fortune i.e their game dying in the ass.

Your talking small percentage of talent spread over a decade, lets say 1 or 2 a year, imagine all the talent who aren't thinking of making it, or are not eligible from the other pacific islands, NRL is a better comp to get to 1st grade for longer and for more money if your are talented enough to last, its the elite guys that defect only to go for the all blacks fame, but only a few converts really make it, among only the small squad, RTS will be lucky to get a look in, Su'alii going to wallabies for enormous cash only to sit on a wing, what he going to do during the year, club rugby if fkn dreadful

Agreed. I think the argument though was well we plonk a side there and we will kill union in that country. It’s ridiculous.

The best thing that could come out of a second NZ team or similar is giving young New Zealanders et. another pathway to a professional competition. We are not going to get everyone and we are probably not going to even get the best because the best will be snapped up by NZRU because they see them playing for the All Blacks

Mate, there are no Lions in the Pacific, I like my monikers to have at least a semblance of relevancy.
Northern Pride is the QRL Cairns RL side, if they are the base home so be it the mascot

As far as resembalance, Wollongong has no dragons, wherever wests is has no tigers and canberra never had any raiders

So it has to be the number 1 sport now 🙄
Perth 1 AFL 2 Cricket 3 Soccer 4 Netball 5 RU 6 Rugby League.

Nobody is saying it has to be the biggest sport in town to get a team, but you've got to be a pretty big town if it's not number one.

But Perth has four times as many people as Wellington or Christchurch. They probably don't have as many league fans per capita, but they only need more than a quarter per capita to be more successful. And as league isn't the biggest game in either of those towns, I'd say Perth probably already has that.

Fine then not the ones on the logo...
Swapped for knights in Newcastle then, seriously tho, cant talk about mascots relevance to a team sport vs region they are from, and then say there aint no lions in tonga etc
Well im pretty sure lions dont roam the streets in brisbane yet the AFL and A-League have them as mascots...
The Northern Pride could have many meaning a Pride is a group of lions, it kinda fits well to me a group of talented Pacific Islands in regards to Rugba lieg

I agree mate. I was taking the p***

I’m sure most people, if they are following a team because of a specific area are going to say nope I’m not going for them because I don’t like the logo
