This isn’t a regional representative comp or international game where players have to play for where they live or who they are eligible for. As you’ve seen first hand Burton & Crichton we’re gone as soon as the right offer came along and the Panthers couldn’t match it.

Developing players will have little to no impact on the strength of the first grade team, professional sport has gone way past that. Perth will get a grant, have sponsors and create revenue same as any other club then they’ll use that to buy their squad same as any other club.

Mind you with an NRL club in place it would be a lot easier than it is currently to sign, develop and keep talent from both Rugby codes over there.
He keeps arguing as if every team in the NRL are set up like the Panthers. Perth will most likely be set up like the Storm- they will be given a feeder team in NSW or QLD cup. They will have a first grade quality players, fringe first grade quality players and state level players. It's just that most of them will not be from WA for a while.

I been saying this for yonks, the Warriors should have been as big and as successful as the Broncos were in their first twenty years, I can only imagine how that might have changed the landscape over there if they`d won 6 premierships , or even 4 and maybe lost a couple.
I think we would have really seen the dent that League could have put in union then.
Some excellent work on trl on the ratings thread

even that idiot sports prophet is agreeing with you

That’s his point

the nrl doesn’t want or need more clubs like the storm

Png will do whatever the nrl tell them to do

Common sense is something you seem to lack

it’s already been discussed that a makeover on that tired ground and potentially a coe is all they will do

doesn’t compare to a minimum of 250 million cold hard Australian dollars being pumped into a team though does it

the funny thing you all haven’t realised is the govt hasn’t even agreed to pay that amount it’s what the arlc is seeking to make the bid happen
Haha by people on here only, there has been no official word from the wa govt on what they are and are not offering in terms of support

once again for the hard of learning
we dont know what the wa govt is offering
we dont know what the Australian govt is offering

I’d argue that’s exactly what the nrl wants, another big city profitable club that’s well supported and producing quality players.

WA’s produced 5 nrl players in last ten years without a club, no reason to believe we won’t produce a lot more with a club and decent funds.

You really do struggle with comprehension. I produced a wish list based on my opinion, that’s it. No one knows what either govt is offering.

they shouldnt fund a team directly, if perth can’t generate $15mill revenue in football club operations it shouldnt be admitted, same as for any new club.

what I WOULD LIKE to see them fund is

new west stand at hbf park
cofe for rl in wa
Nrlwa funding for jnr and female participation
cheap rental for hbf park

thats well within their remit and financial ability.

Put yourself in the nrls shoes

One bid is allegedly getting up to 25 million from the federal govt and one isn’t getting direct support

you can see why png is getting favouritism

and what wa needs to do

and one will long term strengthen and grow the game in australia whilst the other is going to be reliant on future govt’s keeping it viable.

And again that’s the big difference, perth doesn’t need direct funding, it can be self sustainable financially, the pasifika will require significant ongoing financial funding from either a govt or from the nrl FOREVER.

Nrl doesn’t want any more storms

they got lucky once and that’s with 100 million of news ltd money

Well if we don’t do more then they don’t get the bid

40 million in revenue means png will be one of the leading nrl clubs

now we wait to see if albanese actually agrees to that funding

So you'd be happy as a 17 year old to move to the other side of country? As opposed to playing the same sport on the same amount of money around friends and family?

That is why Junior numbers are important here

They will target the same Schoolboy carnival as every other team.
Most of the juniors have several clubs even sports chasing them and will go for the closer club 99.9% of the time.

They need to get some pathways going 1st then can run an NRL side

Cairns is it imo for better or worse

Brisbane wants the jets they don’t need this fifo side but the mayor of cairns does

Can you get to the islands on a direct flight from Cairns?

They need to be somewhere that offers the best long term

According to their Instagram account the nrlwa first grade comp will have 5 senior teams this year not 6. That’s not a good sign of positive things happening in Perth. They appear to be going backwards.

yeah its that chicken and egg scenario again...

I believe having an NRL team will lead to greater junior numbers and better pathways.

How has that mentality affected the Storm? It is entirely possible for there to be junior setups in WA like Victoria has now as well as a link to another established club in QLD Cup or thinking outside the box PNG or Fiji.

Plenty from NZ move to Australian clubs at a similar age and in various sports players move in their teens half way across the world so it’s not quite the world shaking idea you seem to make out.

How many more players in SEQ do you think picked up RL this year because of the Dolphins? Were juniors in Redcliffe going to waste before now? The top down mentality of needing an NRL team in every area to bring players through is 80’s thinking. There is absolutely no reason pathways in PNG & the Pacific couldn’t be bringing through 100s of players without needing an NRL club at the top to facilitate it.

Junior pathways is one factor to consider for professional sport expansion teams but there are plenty just as important or more important.

I was surprised how many kids came across for a shot in our pirates sg ball side. We usually had 3-5 each year from east coast willing to come over. We see a number of kids each year move from wa to John a nrl club pathway in the east,
With the chance of a direct pathway to nrl it will be even more attractive for kids to come over. Then throw in a link up with a qrl club or two, better nrlwa funding and your on the road to a Pirates production line.

I think the player development thing is a negative or con or a challenge or whatever for Perth but the biggest things for any new club are whether they are sustainable and have enough support (and don’t negatively impact anybody else) and second to all that whether they add significantly to the bottom line (directly or indirectly)

On the latter points I think they would be fine. Once they have a club then invest in it to make the first point less and less relevant.
