News ltd don’t want a Perth team
Not sure what your state, ent has to do with the fact news ltd have already blocked easts?

but yeh Over a png or nz team? Yeh I’m sure they’d prefer a club that actually might provide them with something In Australia. Richest state in the country, new market, national advertisers. All things another Australian team gives them the other two don’t. I doubt they see it as a big plus for them but it’s still better than overseas teams which adds nothing for them.

Those afl teams are on fta most weeks. They dont drive a lot to fox. Bit like broncos hence why news ltd supported another brisbane team to get broncos off fta and drive more subscribers in A City that was smaller subscription base for them.

probably true for the die hards, but it’s about new growth longer term as much as existing market share. Converting casuals to rusted on and introducing new people to the game as well as maintaining interest fornall the east coasters and kiwis who move here every year

just an extra 10k WA kayo subscribers in WA is worth over $4mill a year to fox plus greater metro advertising reach which allows stronger sales.

likely if we get in and if ptv gets the ninth game we will mostly play home games 6pm Sunday on ptv. That will drive WA subscribers

one thing for sure is whatever increase it’s going to be more than fox will get from a png or nz club.

They get shown on fox too

Melbourne has a team and we don’t see stellar ratings out of there

Perth will get a team but it won’t be bc of news ltd

if news had to pick it would be brisbane or central coast bears

No one’s paying for kayo if your team is on fta every week!

you have no idea what the fox ratings are in melbourne, and agIn perth isn’t melbourne. Rl is stronger here,

no it won’t, but news ltd won’t stand in the way either which is just as important.

I’ve no doubt at all, but that’s where you have to decide: do you want to do what’s best for the game or what’s best for tv at the expense of the game? We have a clear example where afl expanded as they want to grow their game and tv have still paid overs each deal. You seemingly can have both!

For those pushing the “see how well the Dolphins are doing, Bris3 is a must for the 18th license”, I’m not sure we will get the same instant success story from them.

The Dolphins hugely benefited from being the alternative to the Broncos- the Broncos have been a divisive team in and out of the area and there has been a large supporter base of locals supporting non SEQ teams in greater Brisbane (think Storm fans). With the Dolphins entry, most of these supporters open to following a new team would have moved over, the remaining will be “dyed in the wool” supporters of their original team. I don’t think these new Dolphin fans will drop off too much if they don’t grab any success to much- they are League fans that now have a club to call their own. Add on top there would be a portion that see the Dolphins as “their team” (a la North Greater Brisbane) and there’s you established support for the team.

Brisbane 3 will not have the first pool to draw upon as the Dolphins already have grabbed that demographic. Sure there might be some that do (especially if they base themselves southern or west for the same geographic reason) but I doubt it will be as large and obvious. Like it or not, it is about diminishing returns.

The response to “the Broncos have grown their base” argument is simple- people were intrigued by League again and came out to see how the new guys would affect the comp. Then the Broncos started killing it (perfect timing) which engaged the soft supporters. They are the Broncos fans that aren’t rusted League supporters.

I would love to see another SEQ team and probably would be a soft supporter. I’m sure they will do okay enough and if bidders like Easts Tigers get it, they will be the most successful a third Brisbane team could be. But 18 is absolutely the wrong time. SEQ needs more time to build more fans to make it as successful a start as Dolphins had. It’s a better time to go elsewhere and see if the comp can build from the bottom up.
Nailed it perfectly

One of the major concerns with another team is the availability of talent, of which Perth has none.

WA : 2 million pure fantasy that they would get 10 percent of the market
Fantasy but that an additional 200k engaged in the sport.

NZ : 5 million people and not even fantasy that they would engage a futher 20 percent of the market
Is an additional 1 million engaged in the sport.

WA : unlikely 200k
NZ: likely 1 million

Even making a steel man argument for Perth, it sits at around 1 fifth the potential of another NZ team.

Doesn't make it become a truly national competition.

It becomes a legitimate INTERNATIONAL competition!

But you don't care about any of that because you want to buy a t shirt and go to 12 games a year.

Any new club will be signing exiting nrl and SL first graders for quite a few years. Doesn’t matter where they are. Dolphins allegedly have one of the strongest production lines yet every first team member wa signed from another nrl club, and same gain next season.

beyond that we should see pathways and systems in both WA and in partnership agreements with east coast/NZ clubs come to fruition. Any bid should have to show how they plan to develop talent, I’m sure it will be a criteria the nrl will look at.

yep nz2 has a lot of positives and hopefully in an eventual 20 club comp a strong bid will come from nz and a sustainable second club will emerge. That’s not to say nrl shouldnt be bringing in the strongest Australian RL state without a team currently. Perth offers lots of positives as well.

That's another point. Look at how many expat kiwis go to Warriors games as away fans..
How many expat West Australians are we expecting? 7 ? 9 if Jeremy comes with the wife?
Eh? There’s no evidence crowds v warriors are bigger than crowds v other out of town teams from what I’ve seen and on tv warriors games usually rate the lowest in australia. If nrl is making decisions on a handful of kiwi fans turning up to Australian games we are in trouble!

I'm not ruling it out. The Brisbane Tigers have $135m in assets and a catchment from Bulimba to Yarrabilba.

Ch9 are on record saying they want another Queensland team and more games in SEQ. They also need content for STAN.

If it comes down to financial security and the wishes of the broadcasters then the Brisbane Tigers are the only option that tick every box. The ARLC haven't ruled out going back to Brisbane.

I've said it before, when WA gets a team they should raid Super League and get the best of the Euro players, not expats.
They'll have a lot of cash to spend, offering them a sunny place to live, and play in the best competition in the world.
It would also negate the concerns on player drain.
They could even set up for SL juniors to come over and be part of the club from the start.
It will take a little while for WA to have home grown players coming through, so in the meantime start building a permanent route for the Euros to come.

Edit: mixed in with some existing payers from the NRL of course.

The irony of that is the RFL would be weakened at the expense of a city in Australia that will never be an RL stronghold.
