Getting tired of the national sport argument too....
Like it's only an East coast sport.
It's only an East coast population ya dumb arses! 90 percent of our population- our nation- is on the East coast 🙄
Is Canberra, Newcastle, Townsville our nation too ?
Or are the dots not f**king wide enough? 🤦‍♂️
No, we need 1 dot right over the other side.. perfect lol
largely speaking when people talk national in australia it means the whole country lol
nrl is in a great position to lay stake to the “national” footy code tag of it gets perth and Adelaide into the comp. given it’s regional and act reach as well. With that perception comes a big corporate pay off.

Agreed

it’s like New Zealand is just air brushed from history

I mean afl is a National sport without a team in the nations capital whilst we are

it seems like Australia only means Sydney Perth Adelaide melboring and Brisbane
That’s what happens when 70% of your population lives in 5 capital cities!

So the main issue I've seen with the 'debate' of the whole 18th team is the Juniors and funding. Isn't the purpose of expansion to increase the participation of juniors in that area so they can aspire to one day represent their city's team / a team within the sport they play?

With Perth - They definitely do have a consortium ready to fund a bid for an NRL team. They definitely have a set out plan to increase junior participation. They MOST LIKELY have everything ready to go in alignment with the ARLC's guidelines regarding expansion. Just depends on how hard they push.

PNG - have the backing of the Aus government. Yet, as a realist, I do not think they should be the next team. Would love to see an official team do not get me wrong, but I just do not think it is the right way to go as of this moment. Maybe within a decade ?

NZ2 - Great potential as a bid, and with RU having issues in Aus right now (and to an extent, NZ too with dwindling crowds), along with the increased popularity of the Warriors right now, it would make sense to introduce. How they do it though is the biggest hurdle they will face, along with the location of the team in NZ.

Brisbane3 - Similar case to the Perth Bid, practically have everything ready to go and are pushing hard. Just whether or not they get the green light.

Personal preference for side 18 is Perth. How can we call ourselves a NATIONAL comp when we occupy the East only? Invest in the West, increase participation, create junior pathways, etc. To me, it seems like a no brainer IF we want to expand and be taking more seriously. It creates a new TV Timeslot for both Perth AND the East Coast, and there is a demand with Origin selling out both times and the recent double header. HOWEVER, the issue they run into is the size of their stadium and just how far their funding will go. They will obviously need to invest in a performance centre (COE, if you will), home training ground, etc. I assume they have all their counter arguments ready to get the ball rolling.

At this point in time, I only REALISTICALLY can see Perth or Brisbane 3 working as team 18. The other two, particularly the PNG bid, need to be treated more carefully and have everything financially be sound and prepared. But knowing the NRL (and to an extent the board of the ARLC), they're most likely going to take the $200 million bait from the Gov and approve the PNG bid which will either set the game back 20 years OR the risk will pay off and see the game grow more than it already has.

If the aim is 20 teams, It should go:
18 - Perth
19 - Brisbane 3
20 - NZ 2

If we are to expand to 22 though in the future, bring in Adelaide again and the PNG team.

Well said, good summary of the four main options. Perth should be the front runner though. Need to give Dolphins and Titans room to grow, not plonk another team and cannibalise the support of the current QLD teams.

Check out the value of afl sponsorships to nrl sponsorships and come back and tell me if a 5 metro city approach hasn’t worked!
That's about as likely as it being that they are taller or because they cut their sleeves off.
Likely that there was a SL war that undercut a century of progress.

Look, you're in WA so it seems like a big deal but I promise you nobody on the East coast is in anyway concerned with your little dot in the middle of nowhere. Nothing in the news, no conversation about it- like it doesn't exist.
No big corporate organisations are suddenly falling over themselves to invest in League cause we put a team there. Certainly not to the tune of the 30 million it'll cost each year.

$17mill (as of today) plus whatever the arlc spend on grassroots development.

here’s some facts for you.
90% of media advertising spend is in the metro markets
national companies want national reach, not just nsw and qlnd and buried in Vic with nothing in sa and wa
afl earns a sht more from its sponsors than nrl does
theres only 5 major cities in australia, nrl after 100 years plus is still in only 3 of them. Afl is in all 5 with 2 or more teams in 4 of them.

and on the positive getting a national footprint with 5 metro cities and our regional and act reach finally puts the nrl ahead of the afl. From that comes the rewards they have enjoyed for the last 30 years over us.

So NZ has no corporations and nobody wants international reach?

How many nz sponsors has nrl got? And looking at the two codes revenue figures I guess not many.
You're right, we should give them another team and give them more national reach. The entire South Island is not properly represented and all the way up to Hamilton.
They actually play and like Rugby league too.
Like putting another team in Brisbane, it's almost like the NRL want to reward and represent those who actually play/ contribute to the sport first.

Oh right. Pity that's not right either. Lol, you have no idea.

Mark McGowan calls for AFL to stay with free-to-air TV amid talks over Foxtel plan for Eagles and Dockers
Rebecca Le May

July 18, 2022 3:17PM[/size

Mark McGowan says West Australians are some of the most passionate football fans in the country and should be able to continue to watch our local teams on TV without having to pay.

Amid revelations WA footy fans could be forced to pay to watch Eagles and Dockers games under a News Corp-backed proposal, the Premier has called on the AFL to stay with free-to-air TV for the sake of its fans in the west.

Seven currently holds the free-to-air rights while the pay TV rights are held by Foxtel, which is 65 per cent owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

But the deal expires in 2024 and the AFL has been holding high-level talks with those media giants as well as ViacomCBS-owned Network Ten and its Paramount+ streaming service, and Nine Entertainment.

“Free-to-air TV coverage of our local footy teams goes a long way to growing the game from the junior grassroots level, to country footy and all the way to professional level,” Mr McGowan said.

“It would be a sad day for Australia if people lost the opportunity to watch the football for free.

“I’d strongly urge the AFL to stick with free-to-air viewing of football.”

Mr McGowan said AFL united West Aussies from “all backgrounds and walks of life”.

“Our recent opportunity to host the Dreamtime match and AFL Grand Final demonstrated on the national stage that WA is second-to-none as a footballing State,” he said.

Popular former Fremantle Docker Shaun McManus said any shift from free-to-air to pay-per-view would be difficult for many households.

“I am all for the business of the AFL, by the way, of making as much money as they can and getting value for money out of the product, because it goes down to the players and the clubs,” McManus told The West Australian.

“I hope they get paid millions and millions of dollars, and never have to work again after playing AFL footy.

“But just bearing in mind that affects people who are real grassroots, which is your household people. Hopefully there could be some compromise.

“I’d like to see people being able to watch it at an affordable price.”

“I just think that’s where it’s all going to go because the game is getting so big,” Sumich told The West.

“If they can’t watch it free-to-air and they can’t afford to pay, you’ll see a lot more people go out.

“In America, they watch it in the pubs and it’s a big thing. England would be the same too.

“It’s an outing.”

In that instance, there would no doubt be an outcry.

“It will be a sad day, I think, the day they stop free-to-air, because it’s been like that since I was a kid,” Sumich said.

He predicted the AFL would go with whatever the young or next generations favoured: the ability to watch on their gadgets, on demand, wherever they were.

“I’ve got the AFL app and I can click onto a WAFL game and out of the four games, I can pick any game. And I thought to myself “how good is this?’”

All Lions and Suns games are televised on free to air in Queensland, too. It's been this way for decades.

What’s funny is how much afl red turns people off Perth with his bs. He literally has turned off this forum against perth

I suspect much of the anti Perth sentiment is more anti Perth red as opposed to Perth itself

of course he has a few groupies thatve been sucked in with his bs

wanna bet that Hull, half the size of the Sutherland shire, has bigger crowds and has produced more int rugby league players than Cronulla?

Hull's 2023 population is now estimated at 288,842.

If you combine the attendances for Hull FC and Hull KR you get 21k. Not bad for a small city, but that's split between two clubs. Hull KR only averaged a little over 8.5k fans per game in their best year.

So you're wrong about Hull only being half the size of Sutherland.

How bloody hypocritical of you to focus on the aggregate!

When it comes to Brisbane and Sydney you don't focus on the aggregate of fans attending all matches. You only focus on the average of each team and say there doesn't need to be a team in every "suburb". Now you're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

Two thirds of all sports advertising is in nsw and qld

ads rates are much higher in sydney

advertising rates in Adelaide are below many parts of regional Australia
