The Sharks alone have more juniors than the whole state of WA, that is people's point about the lack of juniors
Wow, you Think?
50 years in the top tier, rl heartland and a pokie den to fund it and they’ve only got 2000 more. That’s the surprising bit!

If that’s the bar maybe we should cut every nrl club that has 3500 or less jnrs in their catchment region?
we could be whittling the league down quite a bit lol

Well as soon as you suggest the junior pathways need investment you get screamed at about handouts.
How do you fill those steps without an NRL club present or the ARLC funding it?
You can't, and frankly the system was purposely designed that way.

The existing clubs, and other vested interests in the sport, act as a cartel and want as little competition as possible. They'll happily strangle the sport's growth to achieve it as well.

You do know that they draw players from around the state.
Like WA would, only a more realistic travel distance and in far far far greater numbers, making it actually viable to bring through the talent.

Let's play a game :
your scout goes as far as Geraldton ( around 5 hours drive) in all directions.
The Cronulla scout does the same...

By how many juniors does the Cronulla scout win by ??
100,000 ? Maybe more?

The amount of juniors around Perth are insignificant to produce NRL quality players. By the numbers you have enough to produce 1 or 2 players.
If Perth was self sustainable, it's an entire squad (30 players) west Australia would need to be producing.

30 × what you have now.
You're so far behind the amount of juniors required in baffles my that you'd want to debate this.

FMD I can’t believe the Perth wannabes can’t grasp this simple concept

in rugby league states clubs end up with the best of the best though natural selection of a large pool of players

Perth are getting the dregs behind afl

I'd like to see a Perth team, I wouldn't even mind if they were next!
But I'm sick of this rainbows and lollipops bullshit.

An honest argument is that it will cost probably 100 million plus over 30 years before we start to see green shoots but if we don't start now it only pushes the date back. That's the case.

If you want to talk about money- you have none and it'll cost more than you think.
If you want to talk players- well you have none and it'll take longer than you think.
If you want to talk about support once the hype dies down and you're around 10th for 5 years in a row- it'll be the lowest of any club bar none.
If you want to talk about success- it'll be harder than you could possibly imagine.

Reality. Let be honest.
Let's get a Perth team but if you want to bullshit- you'll go to the back of the line.

To be fair to afl red we all do that with our favourite expansion bids

every bid has negatives and positives

every bid will grow the game in different ways

Perth red is the worst at it but everyone else is guilty of bagging the rival bids and seeing their bid as untouchable

Perth is going to be hard work (easier than Melbourne)

the one thing going for expansion clubs is salary cap of 12 millon and funding (soon) of 17 million

you could put a club anywhere and financially they will stack up

Good post Mr Gobsmacked. I also wiuld like to see a Perth team. But the way the WA mob set it up, is so unrealistic. Your players aren't just miraculously become NRL standard, your not going to doubke your playing numbers, your crowds aren't going to be the biggest in the game, you're not going to be a financial powerhouse overnight. And players aren't going to flock to Perth because its some sort of utopia and they're escaping the slums that are the east coast.

And AFL Red will not be attending or watching any games.

It’s not like all the existing clubs are made up of junior pathway players. Likewise, I doubt many Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning or Las Vegas Knights players have come from junior ice hockey rinks in their respective locations.

Unearthing more talent is in the interest of NRL clubs, but it’s the responsibility of the NRL/ARLC. There is an abundance of talent in the world which the NRL/ARLC need to identify and build pathways for.
