18th club, whose next?

Whilst that may be so will it really mean the top talent chooses league over union? No of course not, until playing in the nrl or for the kiwis becomes more prestigious than playing for the all blacks it won’t make an iota of difference. If earnings where the key driver the current 17 options to play in the nrl would be enough opportunity and the warriors would be so awash with talent they’d be sat at the top of the table every season.

why did RTS leave the nrl to join union?
He probably got sick of playing with a bunch of also-rans. 😂

If rl really cared about nz the. ARLC wouldn’t have slashed nzrl funding and we’d see the kiwis playing at least 5 test matches at home EVERY year.

adding a version of west tigers to nz trying to attract fans from different cities won’t change the union landscape there one jot. It’s like saying if SL had more clubs in southern England it would damage EPL or if NRL had teams in perth and Adelaide and another team in melbourne ot would damage AFL. Cuckoo thinking!
They just increased funding to the nzrl

it’s pretty hard to play tests during covid. The kiwis are playing a home pretty soon vs Tonga

From what I have read rugby participation is seriously down in New Zealand. I think Covid and concerns about cts have taken their toll. Regardless I am strongly in favour of pert getting the next team. To me it’s a no brainer.

tbh I can live with perth, Adelaide or Christchurch just as long as the next team is a genuine expansion team. I believe perth is a no brainer and has the strongest case and long term the most benefit for the nrl but any proper expansion beyond nsw and qlnd would do me.

Better idea. Revert to a 12 team Sydney comp and play 1-3 games in those locations but add Brisbane Gold Coast Newcastle Melbourne Townsville and Canberra to appease those with no vision no sense of opportunity and no brains.

NSWRL $20mill, NZRL $500k if they are lucky. Hmmm. ARLC sound very serious about growing the game in NZ.

Yep he hits the nail on the head. Foolish to think a second NZ side would have any material impact in NZRU any more than the Warriors have had.

“I seriously don’t think it will have any material effect,
“In that context, I would question whether a second New Zealand team would really stack up financially.
to put it simply, if Super Rugby franchises are finding the going tough in New Zealand, why would a new NRL team fare any better?’’

Whatever a union fan thinks about rugby league growing we should think the opposite. He’s not going to want to see rugby league destroy union in his homeland

Why not both?

Mehrtens said he had written before about his “affection for rugby league, despite carving out a career for the All Blacks”.
“What’s wrong with liking both?’'

Because obviously his reaction to a new league club in nz was fear for his own sport. If he liked both he would say well good luck to the nrl I hope they succeed

he’s not saying the super rugby clubs shouldn’t operate because they can’t get corporate sponsors.

the very fact that he’s afraid of it shows the nrl are on a winner

Or maybe he actually has first hand vision of how Union clubs are financially struggling and is realistic about what that might mean for a second NRL club? Didn't sound like fear, sounded like a heads up. I might add the same heads up the NZRL also have been quoted as making.

Nrl is a different beast to super rugby. Each nrl club salary cap is way above a super rugby club.

I can’t wait for nz2 and seeing league make massive inroads in New Zealand

it’s funny you said the warriors haven’t made inroads. When they are making the finals the tv ratings for their games are up there with the all
Blacks

RU is the dominant sport. If they arent making ends meet how will an NRL club in a small city in Union dominated area? Yes the NRL grant will help but they will still need to generate $15million plus of cash a year beyond that. If there is some mega rich backer willing to throw loads of money at it then maybe but so far I havent heard anyone say financially it stacks up from a sustainability point of view. I hope one day it does as Id love to see a NZ2 club but given the NRLs adamant stance it wont invest anything extra in expansion clubs it doesnt seem to be there at the moment.

I didnt say Warriors hadn't made inroads, I said they haven't impacted one iota on Union in NZ. I dont see people abandoning All blacks or NZRU to follow the Warriors or companies doing the same? I dont see the best jnr talent taking up RL and making the Warriors dominant whilst union ranks diminish and the All-Blacks and NZ clubs quality reduces. Its nonsense to think a NZ2 club will make a difference to RU in NZ. The continuing problems with getting an appealing club competition is their big threat, not NRL.

I guess maybe they could try selling tickets to their games that would be a good start

maybe getting a jersey sponsor that’s a novel
Idea

and selling off all those fancy corporate boxes they have at grounds

and using the exact argument you just used would mean they shouldn’t add a Perth nrl team lmao

yeh as there's no competition in a very small city for all those things with an incredibly successful Union club lol.
I'm under no illusions how hard it will be for a Perth NRL club to be successful against the two AFL clubs. The difference is we have a city approaching 3million people that is one of the wealthiest places in the world and with millionaire backers waiting to own a club.

Yeh but a Perth team is competing with those two afl juggernauts. Super rugby clubs have pretty poor finances especially after the collapse of the competition

and nz2 won’t be playing games in just one city.
