yep we need more stuck in a bygone era wests tigers type clubs in the NRL, not professional self sustaining Melbourne Storm's... there are AFL clubs that approach the Storm to learn ways of how to be more professional but sure, they're a failure...
If the storm ever have a run like the tigers their fan base would be under 5k

everyone loves a winner

the people that follow the tigers are way more loyal than any storm fan will ever be

heck they supported that club after it cost them their old club

given channel nine have no interest In showing raiders vs knights and want dogs eels it’s clear what broadcasters want

There will never be another Melbourne Storm in the NRL.

The Storm were formed on the carcasses of three clubs in late 1997.

They got to their current position via funding from News Ltd and ARLC for 20 years.

The club has bludged off the QRL for 25 years. At one stage it rorted the salary cap to retain the Queenslanders it poached. The club introduced unsavoury tactics like the chicken wing, crusher and hip drop to gain an unfair advantage.

With the dolphins taking away qld talent, png taking their talent the storm are going to be scratchy for players in the future

with more opportunities at home kids won’t want to live in Melbourne to play the game when they can live close to family and are treated like rock stars

“I don’t mind both [cities] but it’s obviously a bit of a refresher to live a normal life. Especially after you play a game, you can get away from footy and do whatever you love doing.”

The Storm model is built on quick sand. Their route to the top was $100m of extra money from News Ltd and ARLC over 20 years. The club relied on the death of the Mariners, Reds, Crushers -- and later the Chargers and Rams -- to field a very strong roster in the late 90s and early 00s. The void caused by the loss the Chargers and Crushers provided the Storm with a steady pathway of quality juniors.

Adelaide and Perth won't have these advantage. n
Nutcases like @Bukowski think a Perth-based team will be a carbon copy of the Storm. The nutcases from Perth and Canberra refuse to accept reality.

I have no doubt the ARLC is concerned about Melbourne's future and will take it into consideration when weighing up the Perth bid. The last thing they will want is two bust clubs in fumbleball territory.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The biggest impediment to a Perth-based team entering the NRL is the Storm's failure to become self-sufficient across all metrics. There's no way the other 16 clubs will want to prop up Melbourne and Perth.

If a Perth nrl team struggles they probably won’t be viable financially

they would need to be very successful from the start and I just dont see them being able to replicate the storms success

png won’t have to do well on the field and their fans will still show up because they like our sport anyway

Extra money on top of what? News owned and ran the club, they could spend however much they like on them you f**king moron. There success since 2006 had nothing to do with defunct super league era clubs either. Stop checking wikipedia for all your comments and knowledge..

I cannot see a Perth-based team being successful on the field. It'll struggle to build a strong roster because the best players will be signed to long-term contracts with the other clubs.

There's no Craig Bellamy to recruit young talent and guide them into stars. Even if there was a Craig Bellamy lurking around, he wouldn't have enough marquee signings to form the nucleus of a strong side.

The club won't be funded by News Ltd. The "millionaires" @Perth Red keeps on alluding to aren't funding a NSW Cup team [to pave the way for one in the NRL]. He says no one else in Australia does it, yet that ignores the most important point. A Perth-based team will face unique challenges that it will need to overcome. If it's run like every other club it will fail. Melbourne were assisted to the top by News Ltd when they held a 50% stake in the ARL. Perth won't have that luxury. V'landys said no money will be wasted on AFL states.

Sigh.

News Ltd held a 50% stake in the ARL until 2012. They also owned the Storm. They held the balance of power by being the primary broadcast partner.

It was a massive conflict of interest. that gave the Storm an unfair advantage over every other club. Without these advantages they wouldn't have survived and thrived over the last 25 years.

If you haven't worked that out by now then you're even more f**ked in the head than the illiterate wanker from Cairns.

Don't even think about denying the advantages handed to the Storm. When News Ltd sold the Storm and relinquished their stake in the ARLC it was under the provision that the ARLC would provide another $30m to the Storm over five or six years.

A Perth-based team won't have these sort of advantages and safety nets. It will be sink or swim from day one. That's the point you stubbornly refuse to get through your thick skull.

..which juniors did storm develop?! Big argument for Perth is player development. Looks false going by storm..
