18th club, whose next?

Pretty much everything is a meaningless throwaway line this far out.

Even most of the PNG stuff is largely empty pleasantries and obligatory remarks. Honestly wouldn't surprise me if the NRL is waiting to see how Albo/Labour goes at the next election before seriously considering committing to PNG.
I'll be surprised if Albo is PM when the next election is held. His popularity is plummeting. We know what Liberal and Labor do when a sitting PM is on the nose.

When their fumbleball colleagues bring up Adelaide and Perth they should say "Auckland and Port Moresby".
Top 10 population centres in Aus & NZ:

1. Sydney RL dominant over AFL
2. Melbourne AFL dominant over RL
3. Brisbane RL dominant over AFL
4. Auckland RL dominant over AFL
5. Perth AFL dominant over RL
6. Adelaide AFL dominant over RL
7. Gold Coast RL dominant over AFL
8. Newcastle RL dominant over AFL
9. Canberra RL dominant over AFL
10. Central Coast RL dominant over AFL

That's 7 out of 10 of the largest population areas in favour of RL. Are we seeing the big picture now why the AFL are desperately pissing hundreds of millions down the drain to get a tiny foothold in our markets? NSW and QLD aren't a battleground, they are THE battleground in Australian sports. Whoever wins them long term dominates.

The AFL aren't "geniuses" for expanding here, they had no choice but to risk spending ridiculous sums to get foreign markets to accept their shit sport. The NRL don't have to do that at all. QLD's population is larger than WA, SA and TAS combined. Let that sink in for a second and tell me if we need to go putting irrelevant dots on a map. We don't, we just need to leverage our heartlands and geographical advantage properly.

Now having said that, I'm in favour of a Perth team in the NRL but let's not overstate the importance of getting some of the AFL's wasteland heartlands because they are largely irrelevant when it comes to winning the code battle.

and despite all that AFL is bigger than us lol so you could logically argue that they are at least smarter and better run than us.

This. Afl needs to expand because geography favours NRL.

Has the money spent on gws been worth it?!

There was a study done in western Sydney which showed out of all the sports played afl ranked last

hundreds of millions including building afl posts everywhere and nobody is playing

if the afl weren’t clueless they would’ve done a demographic analysis of western Sydney and seen the absence of their typical fan base meant it would be a disaster

I remember Kevin sheedy saying how Israel Folau would usher in a wave of Polynesians playing afl

Afl needs to expand to northern states & has lots of money. Gws has been poorly executed.
NRL doesn't need to & shouldn't follow AFL's lead. Both sports in entirely different situations.
You know what’s funny is you don’t mind watching afl yet when it comes to rugby league your knowledge and passion are undoubted

then you’ve got the dopes who claim to not watch the sport who jizz themselves at any mention of it

this forum never ceases to amaze me

imagine being stuck sitting next to one of those guys if they ever actually attended a rugby league match

The problem with some NRL fans is they ain't willing to play the long game.

It takes a generation to make change in a new market, not a few years.

The Storm were averaging less then 10k at one point. The investment pays off

Thanks, but I think maybe ur knowledge of league is greater. Haven't watched afl in a while, but I follow many sports. @Colk boasting about having no afl fans as friends is weird & insular. Likewise @Pneuma being outraged by the Matilda's TV ratings.

As far as afl being a model NRL should follow: which other sport funds expansion at great cost if they don't have to?! Afl needs to do this, NRL doesn't.

Nearly every sport has tried or does try to crack a market that they don’t have a share or presence in.
