18th club, whose next?

The security thing has been done to death

that’s literally why it’s being based in cairns

private jets to and from games and I’m sure the best hotels and training facilities will be provided

this team isn’t going to want for anything financially

If I was V'landys I would be demanding a fence around the playing field to prevent fans from swarming onto the field and an armed escort to and from the ground. That should eliminate the possibility of players being attacked.

The "top down" approach pushed by the "expansionists" makes more sense with PNG than it does for fumbleball markets like Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. PNG needs an NRL team to incentivise development at the grassroots level. You can bet your arse it will lead to more than 5k registered players across PNG after 25 years.

People thinking that players will be "registered" in a country like PNG is laughably ignorant.

And how do the PNG players get to training?

Best ask these kids...

Processed as being set up, Hopefully the other areas that want a team do something similar.

Because none of them are recruiting 36 players a year for their squads

So the Papuans will train in PNG and the rest of the club in Aus?
Is Justin Pascoe running the show?

That is the detail I guess we wait to see but Storm had their juniors in QLD up until last season.

You'd think Perth would spend a lot of time on the East coast too, particularly if the 2nd tier guys join an existing QLD/NSW Cup that.

Short term pain for long term goals

NRL players don't pay anymore tax then anyone else, and you certainly dont pay a total 47% on $150k salary.

PNG tax rate is actually a flat 42%, so a much worse deal for anyone earning $180k or less.

They'd be living and working in Cairns, so would likely be Australian residents for tax purposes anyway.

Funny you mention those clubs, How many recruits are they signing on single year deals from say Brisbane and Sydney?

No one is saying in their parents pockets but wives in particular need family given the life of an NRL player.

As for the player themselves, Of course they want to leave the nest but they aren't going to leave halfway through courses or whatever they are doing off field.

Your England example as you used also very few young ones go over. Certainly not without a multi year deal, Same applies for NZ, Cairns, Perth and anywhere wanting a team. Players and coaches are the biggest issue with expanison.

As for the tax rate, isn't 47% what Kiwi, poms and anyone not an Australian citizen pays?

CBF researching how many compared to Brisbane or Sydney clubs but generally players settling for 1-2 year deals aren’t exactly flush with offers.

It isn’t exactly uncommon for young people to move cities with their wives & kids in most cases for less money. Schools can be changed, courses can be transferred, family can visit and be visited. It’s a minor issue at best IMO and like you say applies to pretty much any club outside of Sydney or Brisbane. Any player from an area that doesn’t have an NRL club has to make it work.

Foreign residents pay a higher tax than Australians only on their first 45k (32.5%) after that it’s the same.
